Bendix/Regina Cold Start Improvements, 700 Series With B230F Except California Models

In low ambient temperatures (below -5 degrees C or 23 degrees F) cold start difficulties may be experienced on vehicles with the B230F engine variants equipped with the Bendix/Regina control systems. This condition is caused by a rich fuel mixture during engine crank and cold start warm-up functions.

The installation of an additional wire (cable) harness P/N 3544343-1, from the cold start injector to the starter motor activating switch connector No. 15a or 16 will rectify this condition. To install the wire (cable) harness, proceed as follows:

Remove the 2-pole electrical connector from the cold start injector. Fold back the protective rubber cover away from the electrical connector.

Remove the positive "+" terminal (blue-green wire) from the connector. Cut the positive "+" terminal off of the blue-green wire. Using PVC tape, tape over the end of the blue-green wire. Fold it back over itself and tape it over to ensure proper insulation.

Install the wire P/N 3544343-1, which consists of a wire with connector pins on both ends, one of which is insulated. Note: If P/N 3544343-1 is not available the wire harness could be made. Proceed to page 3 for instructions and procedure.

Place the uninsulated end of the new cable harness through the rubber cover to the connector for the cold start injector.

Push the new terminal into the connector. Position the protective rubber cover and ensure cover seals properly. If necessary, use electrical tape to obtain a proper seal.

Connect 2-pole connector to the cold start injector. Route the insulated end of the cable harness through the clamp and connect it to the spare pin (15a or 16) on the starter motor solenoid switch.

Fasten the wire to the main engine harness using strip clamps to prevent wire pinching or chafing.

IMPORTANT: As a result of the above modification, when fault tracing the fuel control system using the self-diagnostics, the function check of the cold start injector can no longer be performed while in mode 3. Fault code 3-2-1 (cold start injector) will be permanently stored in the self-diagnostic memory. However, the Check Engine Lamp (CEL) will not illuminate. In addition if the vehicle is towed into the shop (no start condition), the spark plugs must be replaced. Also change oil/filter, then check and if necessary, adjust the throttle plate and micro switch.

If P/N 3544343-1 is not available the wire harness could be made by performing the following procedure.

Required Material

Description Part Number Quantity

Terminal 968070-3 1 piece
Terminal 949404-8 1 piece
Terminal Housing 947848-8 1 piece
Wire (green)
1.5 sq.mm/16 gauge 954447-9 Sold by meter
PVC Housing (0.5 mm) 185506-3 Sold by meter
Crimp tool 9999322-2 (or equivalent)
Procedure

Note: Refer to above illustration when performing the following procedure.

Cut a 440 mm (17.3") length of the wire and a 400 mm (15.7") length of the PVC housing. Pull the wire through the PVC housing, then crimp terminal 949679-5 to one end of the wire and terminal 949404-8 to the other end of the wire and mount terminal housing onto the terminal.
