System Description

SRS Components:

SRS Assembly:

This system consists of an inflatable bag, mounted in an assembly in the center of the steering wheel. The rear of the assembly incorporates a gas generator which inflates the bag. A crash sensor is mounted under the driver's seat which records deceleration of the car. A standby power unit supplies the system with power to inflate the bag, if normal power supply is interrupted.

If deceleration recorded by the crash sensor is sufficiently high, the unit delivers a current which triggers the gas generator, producing a quantity of non-toxic nitrogen which fills the bag in a few hundreths of a second. Immediately after the collision, the gas is released through a ventilation hole and the bag slowly collapses.

The entire sequence of inflation and collapses takes approximately 0.2 seconds. The system also includes a knee bolster behind the steering wheel.
