Removal





1. M 46: Relieve the overdrive only if the gearbox is to be dismantled. Jack up the rear wheels and run the engine with the overdrive engaged. Disengage the clutch and switch off the engine.

2. Disconnect the cable from the negative pole of the battery.





3. Fit engine support P/N 5006 and tension the hook.








4. Release the rear end of the gearbox.
- Disconnect the propeller shaft from the gearbox.
- Disconnect the gearshift rod from the gear lever.
- Slacken the exhaust pipe joint.
- Remove the gearbox support cross-member. At the same time, release it from the gearbox.
- Lower the hook of 5006 until 10 mm (0.4 in) remain between the distributor cover and the bulkhead.
- Remove the connectors for the reversing light switch.
- M46 only: Remove the connectors for the overdrive switch and solenoid.
- Release the gear lever carrier from the gearbox.
5. Release the front end of the gearbox.
- Remove the starter motor.
- Remove the slave cylinder or clutch cable from the clutch housing.
- Remove the upper bolts from the clutch housing.
6. Remove the gearbox.
- Place the hoist with fixture P/N 5972 under the gearbox.
- Remove the lower bolts from the clutch housing.
- Lower the gearbox. At the same time, lift the front end of the gear lever carrier, so that the gearbox is free for removal.
