Ignition
TESTING PROCEDURE:NOTE: While trouble shooting, always check the wiring, fuses and connectors for good condition and routing. Use the wiring diagrams found in CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS to supplement your testing efforts.
Throttle Position Sensor Adjustment:
1. Turn ignition OFF.
2. Check the throttle position sensor adjustment by opening the throttle slightly and listen for a "click" (idle switch opening).
a. If the "click" occur's immediately after throttle opening, proceed to step 7.
b. If the "click" does not occur immediately after throttle opening, proceed to next step.
3. Loosen throttle position sensor mounting bolts (3mm hex).
4. Turn sensor slightly clockwise.
5. Turn sensor counter-clockwise until the switch "clicks". Tighten mounting bolts.
6. Recheck setting as in step 2.
Accessing Ignition ECU Connector:
7. Turn ignition OFF.
8. Access ignition ECU by removing the panel under left hand side of instrument panel.
9. Remove ECU connector by pushing out the catch and folding out the wire cluster.
10. Check ignition ECU ground connections at intake manifold. They should make good contact.
Removing Protective Cover:
11. Remove connector protective sleeve.
IMPORTANT: ^ Never check connections from the front. Connectors can get damaged and worsen the problem.
^ Check connections through the holes in the connector.
^ Connection pin numbers are printed on the connector side.
Checking Terminal Pins:
12. Check that terminal contacts have been pushed down evenly in connector. If any connectors have been pushed down to far, poor connection may result.
Checking Battery Supply:
13. Check main power supply by connecting a voltmeter between pin 5 (brown) in ECU connector and ground.
Reading: approx. 12 volts
14. If no voltage registers, check wire between ECU and fuse-box located behind the center console ash tray. Check fuse #1, #3 and wiring to battery (incl. battery terminals). Repair as necessary.
Checking Throttle Position Switch:
15. To check the throttle position sensor, connect an ohmmeter between pin 7 (orange) at ECU connector and ground.
Reading: 0 ohms
16. Depress the gas pedal slightly, so the idle switch in the throttle position sensor opens.
Reading: infinite
17. If a fault occurs, measure the resistance at the throttle position sensor. The center pin is ground.
a. If resistance reading is the same, replace the throttle position sensor and retest.
b. If resistance reading is correct, check wiring, ground and connectors. Fix as necessary.
18. After testing, disconnect all test equipment, reconnect all connectors (including the ECU connector) and remount all panels.
