GA. Engine Does Not Start

GA. Engine does not start

General
A few simple tests will reveal whether the fault lies in the fuel, ignition or fuel distribution system. Begin with GA1 and follow the instructions for the best results.

Intermittent faults
If the symptoms arise erratically so that the engine starts and runs normally at the time of the test, the Volvo System Tester can offer the assistance which is required. Connect the System Tester and carry out the test according to P. Running test Volvo System Tester.

Conditions:
Possible fault codes are dealt with. Starter motor functions. Fault symptoms do not arise intermittently (see above).

GA1

Fuel pump
- Ignition on.
Listen to whether the fuel pump is working.
The fuel pump should pump for approx. three seconds after the ignition has been switched on.

If the fuel pump works:
^ Checking of voltage supply to injectors GA2

If the fuel pump does net work:
^ GB. Checking the fuel pump. GB. Checking the Fuel Pump

GA2

Checking of voltage supply to injectors
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between one of the injector tabs and ground.
The voltmeter should show battery voltage.

If the value is OK:
^ injection pulses GA3

If the value differs:
^ GC. Checking the auxiliary relay. GC. Checking the Auxiliary Relay

GA3

Injection pulses
Connect a voltmeter between 1 and 2 on one of the injectors.
- Operate the starter motor.
The voltmeter should show 200-700 mV
^ Continue to Spark GA4.

GA4

Spark
Undo one ignition cap and attach a separate spark plug to it.
Hold the spark plug against the engine block.
- Operate the starter motor and observe the spark.

1. If there are neither Injection pulses GA3 nor Spark GA4:
^ Continue troubleshooting the impulse sensor according too PB. Rex-I #10, Rex-I #23. PB. Regina #1, Rex-I #10, Rex-I #17, Rex-I #23

2. If there are no Injection pulses GA3 but there is a Spark GA4:
^ Continue with GD. Checking Regina. GD. Checking Regina

3. If there is no Spark GA4 but there are Injection pulses GA3:
^ Continue with GE. Checking Rex-I. GE. Checking Rex-I

4. If there are both Injection pulses GA3 and Spark GA4:
^ Checking the idle switch GA5.

GA5

Checking the idle switch
- Ignition on.
- Activate mode 2 and examine the idle switch according to D. Troubleshooting via the diagnostic socket. Bendix System [Regina/Rex-I]
The diagnostic system should respond with code 3-3-2 when the throttle is rotated (idle switch released).

The diode flashes rapidly:
^ GF. Checking the throttle switch. GF. Checking the Throttle Switch

The diagnostic system responds with code 3-3-2:
^ S. Fuel pressure and residual pressure. S. Fuel Pressure and Residual Pressure
