HG. Problems Starting When Cold

Fault tracing conditions
All DTCs remedied. The engine is cold (<25°c = 77°F). The fault is not intermittent (See HH. Intermittent starting problems). HH. Intermittent Starting Problems

Checking The Idle Switch
- Ignition on.
- Go into DTM 2 and check the idle switch in accordance with C. Fault tracing via the DLC. Bosch System [LH/EZK]
The OBD system should respond with code 3-3-2 when the throttle is turned and the idle switch disengages.

The LED flashes rapidly
^ WC. Adjusting TP switch. WC. Adjusting the TP Switch

The OBD system responds with code 3-3-2:
^ Injector pulses HG2.

Injector Pulses
Connect a voltmeter between terminals 1 and 2 on one of the injectors.
- Operate the starter motor.
The voltmeter should read 400-900 mV

If this value is OK
^ Check the spark plug HG4.

If the reading is incorrect
^ Check the ECT sensor HG3.

Checking The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
Carry out fault tracing in accordance with ED. DTC 1-2-3 Engine temperature sensor signal absent or faulty. DTC 1-2-3

If no fault is found
^ Return to A. How fault tracing is carried out. A. Fault Tracing Chart

Checking The Spark Plugs
- Remove all spark plugs.
Check that none of the spark plugs are worn and that the correct type spark plug is being used.

If the spark plugs are OK
^ Check the fuel pressure and residual pressure HG5.

If the spark plugs are worn
^ Replace all the spark plugs.

If fuel pressure and residual pressure are OK
^ Return to A. How fault tracing is carried out. A. Fault Tracing Chart
