Drainage and Recycling, Checking A/C

CAUTION:

- Since legislation and regulations for handling refrigerant may vary from country to country, it is important that the provisions applicable in the country in which filling and recycling units are used should be observed.

- Read the safety precautions when working on A/C systems:
Safety Precautions

- Read the general information on repair and replacement of A/C system components:
A/C System Components

- Check which type of refrigerant is used in the A/C system. This is important to avoid mixing of refrigerant types, resulting in damage to the compressor and equipment. Look in the engine compartment for labels indicating the particular refrigerant (R12 or R134a) used in the A/C system. It is also important that the correct grade of oil is used in the system.
R12 Mineral oil
R134a PAG oil
R12 to R134a (retrofit) Ester oil

Checking A/C System
Start engine. Switch ON A/C system. Select HIGHEST blower speed and FULL cooling (not recirculation). Open front doors or windows. Check if compressor starts.
If compressor starts, system contains refrigerant. Proceed as follows:
- switch off engine
- test for leaks with leak detector 9511207, alternatively, an approved detector
- connect R12 drainage/recycling unit. Alternatively, ordinary collection unit may be used.
- evacuate system of R12 until vacuum is achieved
- disconnect drainage/recycling unit
- replace any leaking components (not applicable if corresponding components are included in conversion kit).

If compressor does not start, refrigerant leakage may have occurred. Proceed as follows:
- inspect for visible leaks or other system faults
- connect R12 drainage/recycling unit. Alternatively, ordinary collection unit may be used.
- evacuate system of R12 until vacuum is achieved
- disconnect drainage/recycling unit
- replace any leaking components (not applicable if corresponding components are included in conversion kit).
