EGR Temperature Sensor: Description and Operation

Fig. 123 E.G.R. TEMPERATURE SENDER:

PURPOSE
Used by the fuel injection and ignition ECU:

The sensor (mounted in the upper EGR pipe) measures the temperature of the exhaust gases returning to the intake manifold. By detecting the temperature variations, The control unit can determine whether or not the EGR system is operating.

OPERATION
The sensor may be either a Positive Temperature Co-efficient (PTC) type or an Negative Temperature Co-efficient (NTC) type and is designed to measure temperatures up to 932°F (500°C).

PTC means that the resistance increases as temperature increases. PTC sensors can be identified by 1/8 inch NPT (tapered pipe) threads.

NTC means that the resistance decreases as temperature increases. NTC sensors can be identified by M10 threads (metric).

NOTE: The sensor is highly sensitive to shock and impact. Particular care must be taken when handling and installing it.
