PUR-bonded windshield, 940

Before commencing work, read the section on the use of chemicals in Service Manual, Section 8 (81, 84), Bodywork repairs, sheet metal and glass, 700 1992- page 5.

At the beginning of the 1994 Model Year, a new windshield was introduced for 940 Series vehicles. The new windshield, P/N 6846651-5, replaces previous 940 windshields. A two component PUR adhesive must be used when installing the windshield on 1994 940 vehicles. For 940:s up to M/Y 1993, Butyl Tape P/N 1321227-9 is still available for installation of this windshield.

Two component PUR adhesive kit and related items listed in this bulletin are available from Volvo.

Adhesive Kit 1161331-3 (contains PUR adhesive, glass primer and glass activator)
PUR Activator 1161373-4 30 ml
Cleaner H 1161436-9 250 ml
Adhesive Gun 1161395-7

Remove:
- wiper arms
- wiper arm grommets. Twist through 1800 and pull straight upward
- wiper well cover panel well (three screws)

Note:
Plastic sleeves (1334578) on outer screws must be replaced.

Remove:
- trim at top of windshield
- trim at A-posts. Use flat blade. Insert blade under trim. Feel for centre tab on clip. Press blade downward towards windshield.

- clips from top edge and A-posts
- support clips (two) at bottom of windshield

Place masking tape on windshield pillars and wing edges to protect paintwork from damage by cutting wire.

Thread piano wire from inside to outside through PUR bead.

Use needle-nosed pliers to pull wire from outside.

Attach wire to handle on outside and to counterhold inside car.

Two-person operation

Press counterhold firmly as far as possible from point of cutting at inside of windshield.

Exert smooth, gentle pulling action on handle outside.

Pause and move counterhold gradually while maintaining tension on wire.

"Saw" around corners.

Take care to avoid damage to interior fittings and paintwork.

Attach suction cups to windshield and lift out glass.

PUR bead on body may be smoothed off with chisel as required. Always leave part of the bead, with a height of approx. 1 mm. Clean flange around PUR bead with cleaning agent H.

If bonding is not to be carried out within one hour, PUR bead on body must be activated with PUR/RIM activator when work continues.

Note:
Under no circumstances may paint primer be applied to old PUR bead.

Preparations

Open a side window, otherwise the position of the newly bonded windshield may be disturbed if a door is closed.

Place windshield on stand.

Attach suction cups.

Clean area of glass to be bonded with cleaning agent H.

Bodywork

If any part of windshield opening requires painting, body flange must be masked after application of sealing coat.

Masking should be removed when all painting has been completed.

If body flange has, nevertheless, been painted with top coat, primer must be applied to ensure maximum adhesion of PUR.

Apply glass activator to glass surface to which PUR adhesive is to be applied (wipe on/wipe off).

Apply glass primer over activator. Apply liberally without allowing primer to run.

Apply double-sided adhesive tape (P/N 6846564) to bulkhead member above wiper well cover panel clips (three).

Remove existing tape, if any.

Clean with cleaning agent H.

Install new clips for top trim.

Spacer

Ensure that spacers on A-posts and at top of windshield are intact and seated firmly in position.

Replace, as required:

3518259 (dark blue) at bottom of A-posts

3518244 (black) in other positions

Spacers on A-posts are located as illustrated.

Top edge of flange is provided with openings for locating clips.

Install windscreen Apply PUR adhesive to windshield.

Note:
Two-component PUR adhesive must be used in all cases when car is equipped with dual bag SRS.

Use gloves and ensure that ventilation is adequate.

Hold spray at right-angles to glass with guide pin outside edge of glass.

Lift windshield into position.

Windshield must be placed in position within 10 minutes if two-component adhesive is used.

Press windshield firmly into position by hand.

Gap at top and at each side should be equal.

Press down windshield to bear against spacers and spacing tape.

Use strips of tape to secure windshield to roof.

Measure depthwise position of windshield with sliding calipers.

Measure combined thickness of windshield and PUR adhesive above the windshield frame.

Measure distance at each of four corners should be max. 12 mm.

Measure distance along top and bottom edges and along windshield pillars should be between 8 and 11 mm.

Note:
This will ensure proper fit of windshield to moulding.

Remove tape from pillars and windshield edges.

Reinstall:

- trim

- cover panel

- grommets

- wiper arms

Note:
Vehicles with dual bag SRS systems may be driven 3 hours after use of two-component PUR adhesive.
