ATTACHING WAIST TRIM TO DOORS
To obtain a reliable bond between the trim strip and the door when attaching the new, wider waist trim strips, double-sided tape must be used at the front edge of the trim.
Double-sided tape, P/N 9511020-1.
This method should also be used as a service solution on cars where the waist trim has loosened at the front edge.
From model year 1995 double-sided tape has been introduced in production. When reinstalling waist trim attached with double-sided tape, the old tape must be removed and replaced with new tape to ensure a good bond to the door panel.
The method for removal and installation of the waist trim
is described in Service Manual:
Section 8 (82-86, 88)
Interior, exterior

ATTACH TAPE TO WAIST TRIM
- Clean the front section of the door panel where the waist trim is to be attached.
- Clean the front section of the waist trim on the inside where the tape is to be attached.
Use cleaning agent for PUR bonding.
P/N 1161436-9. Use protective gloves.
- Dry surfaces thoroughly for best results.
LOCATE THE WAIST TRIM ON THE DOOR PANEL
Check that the panel is at room temperature.
- Cut a 9 cm (3.5") strip of double-sided tape.
- Cut away 35 mm (1.4") of the double-sided tape but let all of the protective paper remain in place on the tape.
Heat the waist trim and the tape to 37°C (100°F) with a heat gun before proceeding.
- Press the double-sided tape into place on the inside of the trim strip, 2 mm (0.08") from the front edge (see illustration).
Bend and point the exposed protective paper forward so it is accessible when the waist trim is in position
Adjust the waist trim lengthwise when it is positioned. The exposed protective tape should be accessible when it is in position.
- Pull off the protective tape.
- Press the waist trim into place at the front edge so the double-sided tape sucks to the door panel.

To further reduce the possibility of loose moldings, add shims if the rear door molding makes contact with the front door molding when the near door molding is fully open.
Proceed as follows:
- Remove the rear door panel from the affected side(s).
- Install shims (P/N 91330694) between the rear door stop and the rear door end plate. The door stop can be accessed from the speaker hole in the door sheet metal.
NOTE
Fitting of shims will slightly reduce the rear door open angle.
