Connecting Test (Breakout) Box

Special tools required/recommended: 981 9190, 981 3194

1) Connecting the Breakout Box to the Combined Instrument Panel:

- Turn ignition off.
- Expose combined instrument panel. (Remove dashboard cover). Service and Repair

- Disconnect combined instrument panel.
- Check that the male and female terminals in the combined instrument panel and cable harness connectors are intact and secure and that the wiring to the female terminals is properly attached to the terminal.
- Check the terminals relevant to the diagnostic trouble code (DTC)/symptom especially well.

Test Box On Cable Harness Dashboard:

- Connect adapter 981 3194 to combined instrument panel connectors A and B and connect the breakout box 981 3190 to adapter, then proceed with step 2 below.

2) Checking Ground Terminals:

- Verify ignition off.

- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).

- Connect an ohmmeter between the battery negative terminal and:
# 15 (# A15)
# 17 (# A17) on the breakout box.
- The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 Ohms for all readings

If reading is OK, return to the fault-tracing procedure where it was interrupted (where you left off).
If reading is incorrect proceed with step 3 below.

3) Checking for an Open-Circuit:

Check ground terminals 31/50 and 31/51 in the central electrical unit and their wiring for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation. Check ground lead between central electrical unit and chassis for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation. To perform these checks, Permanent Fault . Then continue with step 4 below.

4) Verification:

Note: After carrying out the repair check that the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition off.

- Combined instrument disconnected

- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).

- Connect an ohmmeter between the battery negative terminal and:
# 15 (# A15)
# 17 (# A17) on the breakout box.
- The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 Ohms for all readings

If reading is OK the fault is corrected
If reading is incorrect, proceed with step 5 below.

5) Fault-Tracing Information:
The fault should now have been diagnosed and corrected. If this is not the case the fault-tracing has failed. If you want to continue fault tracing, start over again at step 1 above.
