Using A Volvo Scan Tool (ST) or Equivalent

General
The transmission control module (TCM) can be read off manually using the flashing code sequences, this however means relatively long flashing sequences for each incident. In contrast, using the facilities available in the ST, the TCM can be read off ten times faster. High speed activation occurs in approx. 10 seconds. After this initial period each operation takes only a few seconds to complete.
Depending on the system module to be activated the following abbreviations appear in the text display on the ST:
The Scan Tool Volvo System Tester keyboard functions
ENTER:
Activates the selected function and/or shows the next menu level.
EXIT:
Aborts a function or shows the previous menu level.
YES/NO:
Used for responding to questions.
The arrow keys are used for moving within the menus and scrolling the text on the display up or down when there is more text than can be displayed on one screen.
HELP:
The HELP key provides help functions for the keys in the menu that is being used at the time the HELP key is pressed.
The Display:
When the system is in operating mode a flashing symbol can be seen in the upper right-hand corner of the display. The abbreviations in the text display are explained in the table above. Text that requires the user to select or activate a function appears in CAPITAL letters. Text which gives information appears as lower case (small) letters.
Connecting the Volvo System Tester Scan Tool
- Ignition OFF.
- Insert memory cassette.
- Connect the adapter cable to the scan tool (ST) and data link connector (DLC) A.
- Connect cable for power supply to the car battery. Red cable clip to positive terminal.
- Turn on the ST using the switch on the adapter cable box.
- Ignition ON.

Self-diagnostics
The Scan Tool (ST) carries out a series of self-diagnostics to check memory cassette status and the ST hardware.
Clearing DTCs.
YES to clear the DTC.
NO / EXIT to return to the previous menu without clearing the DTC.
If all the DTCs have not been read the text as shown on the left will appear on the display.
Code not erased. Fault still exists.
NOTE: Read off the DTCs again to determine which one is still set.
When all the DTCs have been cleared the menu will appear.
