CB. Scan Tool Communicates DTMs (Volvo OBD Diagnostic Key)



DIAGNOSTIC KEY SCAN TOOL ST






The Volvo diagnostic key, scan tool ST is a special tool for communicating with the Volvo OBD system. Communication operates in diagnostic test modes DTM 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The scan tool can perform the same functions activated using the data link connector DLC A aided by the flashing LEDs and activation button. USING THE SCAN TOOL DIAGNOSTIC KEY MAKES THESE OPERATIONS SIMPLER AND QUICKER TO CARRY OUT.

Connecting Volvo Diagnostic Key scan tool ST






- Ignition OFF
- Insert memory cassette.
- Plug interface cable into Data Link Connector DLC A.
- Ignition ON.
- Set gearshift selector to position P.

Using the arrow keys, scroll to A1 EI. TRANS: Press*.


- Press*. AW3O-43/AW50-42 appears.
- Press*. Select highAow speed with arrow keys.
- Press*.

DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE 1


Diagnostic Test Mode 1 is performed by Volvo Diagnostics. Stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be read off and erased in DTM 1.

Reading DTCs






- Using the arrow keys, scroll to FUNC1: DIAGNOSIS 37. Press *.
- Press the * key to display the first DTC.
- Note the code and continue displaying the codes until the first DTC returns to the display.
- Press * until FUNC1: DIAGNOSIS Press* is displayed.


Clearing DTCs.

- Use the arrow keys to scroll to DEL.EL.TRANS. Press*.
- Follow the instmctions in the display window.




DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE 2


Using DTM 2 is performed by Volvo Diagnostics and verifies whether certain system components are operating.

Checking signals from sensors







- Move the gear selector to position R and set the mode selector to mode S.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll to FUNC2: ACTIVATE Press*.
- Press the * key.
- Activate the sensors by operating the controls in the order given in the table below.

For optimum results, the sensors should be activated in the following order. It is also possible to test individual components.

NOTE: Certain models: The stop (brake) light switch also sends a signal to the control module. Use "SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE" to move the gear shift selector from the P to the R position at operation 2 in the table above.



DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE 3






Diagnostic Test Mode DTM 3 is performed by Volvo Diagnostics and activates components in the system according to a predetermined pattern.

The tests are performed as follows:

NOTE: On cars with Turbo and/or OBD II. When activating operation 6 and 7, according to the table below, no changelsympton is indicated on the engine, transmission or combined instrument. To check these functions proceed as follows before activating DTM 3:

- Ignition OFF
- Connect testbox
- Connect a voltmeter to the terminals indicated in the table below. Check the voltmeter reading when function is activated.

- The gear selector must be in position P or N.
- The speed must be 0. This means that this test cannot be carried out while driving!
- Start engine and allow to idle.


Testing of output signals

- Use the arrow keys to scroll to FUNC3: CYCL. ACT. Press*.
- Press * to activate.






The Diagnostic key shows the order in which the components will be activated.




DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE 4

Diagnostic Test Mode DTM 4 is performed by Volvo Diagnostics and activates the same components as Diagnostic Test Mode 3. The activation occurs for each component on demand.

The highest rate is selected automatically when the Volvo Diagnostic Key scan tool is used.

The tests are performed as follows:






NOTE: On cars with Turbo and/or OBD II. When activating DTCs 4-3-1 and 4-3-2 no change/sympton is indicated on the engine, transmission or combined instrument. To check these functions proceed as follows before activating DTM 4:

- Ignition OFF
- Connect testbox
- Connect a voltmeter to the terminals indicated in the table below. Check the voltmeter reading when function is activated.

- The gear selector must be in position P or N.
- The speed must be 0. This means that this test cannot be carried out while driving!
- Start engine and allow to idle (this applies to codes 4-1-4, 4-2-2 and 4-2-3)


Testing with Volvo Scan tool (ST) - Diagnostic Key






- Use the arrow keys to scroll to FUNC4: IND.ACT. Press*.
- Press * and use the arrow keys to scroll to the component you wish to test.
- Press * again to activate the selected component.





DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE 5

Using DTM 5 is performed by Volvo Diagnostics and continually reads values from certain sensors.

NOTE: The adaptive shift speed function is not yet available as a TCM function. This will be available in the future.

The Scan Tool interprets the flashing codes which the TCM transmits and presents the value in text on the ST display.

NOTE: No table is required for converting the results using this Scan Tool.

Reading Off Data






- Use the arrow keys to scroll to FUNC5: READ DATA Press *.
- Press * and use the arrow keys to scroll to the desired function (sensor).






- When the desired function is displayed, press * to display the value.



DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE 6

Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 6 is performed by Volvo Diagnostics and is used for entering certain data in to the transmission control system.

NOTE: This Diagnostic Test Mode has not yet been programmed in the control module. The function is intended for future use. It is however possible to follow the method described in this DTM. The operation of the transmission will not be affected.

Resetting Adaptive Functions






Use the arrow keys to scroll to FUNC6: PRINT. Press*.
Press * and use the arrow keys to scroll to the value to be reset.






When the desired function has been selected, press in order to reset the adaptive function.
