HA. The Engine Will Not Start

HA. The engine will not start

General
The fault can be traced to the fuel, ignition or distributor Systems by carrying out some simple tests. Start at HA1 and follow the instructions for the best results.

Intermittent faults
If the symptoms occur intermittently the Volvo ST can help. Connect the ST in accordance with 0. Volvo ST and carry out tests in accordance with R. Running Test.

Conditions:
Any DTCs have been remedied. Battery is fully charged. The starter motor is working. The fault symptoms are not intermittent (see above).

HA1

Fuel Pump (FP)
- Ignition on.
Listen to see if the FP is running.
The FP should operate for three seconds when the ignition has been switched on.
In certain versions of the B230 F 1990 model the FP does not start when the ignition is switch on.
- Operate the starter motor and listen to see if the FP is operating.

If the FP is operating
- Check the power supply to the injectors HA2.

If the FP is not operating
- HB Check the FP. HB. Checking The Fuel Pump

HA2

Checking The Power Supply To The Injectors
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between one of the terminals on one of the injectors and GND.
The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

If this value is OK
- Injector pulses HA3.

If the reading is incorrect
- HC. Check the suppressor relay. HC. Checking the Suppressor Relay

HA3

Injector Pulses
Connect a voltmeter between terminals 1 and 2 on one of the injectors.
- Operate the starter motor.
The voltmeter should read 200-1500 mV.
- Continue with Spark HA4.

HA4

Spark
Remove a plug cap and install a spare (test) spark plug.
Ground the spark plug against the engine block.
- Operate the starter motor and check the spark.

If there are neither Injector pulses HA3 nor a Spark HA4
- Carry out fault tracing on the RPM sensor in accordance with FE. DTC 2-1-4 DI. DTC 2-1-4

If there are no Injector pulses HA3 but there is a spark.
- check TP switch HA5.

IF there is no Spark HA4 but there are Injector pulses HA3
- Continue with HE, checking the DI. HE. Checking the DI EZ 116 K

If there are both Injector pulses HA3 and Spark HA4
- Continue with X. Fuel pressure and residual pressure. X. Fuel Pressure and Residual Pressure

HA5

Checking The Throttle Position (TP) Switch
- Disconnect the connector from the TP switch
- Operate the starter motor.

If the engine starts
- Try using a new TP switch.

If the engine does not start
- Check the signal wiring HA6.

HA6

Checking The Signal Wiring
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between terminals 2 and 3 in the connector.
The voltmeter should read approx. 12 V.

If this value is OK
- Continue with HD. Checking MFI. HD. Checking the Fuel MFI LH 2.4

If the reading deviates
- Check the wiring between terminal 3 in the connector and #3 on the control module for grounding.
