Air Bag Systems: Service Precautions

Prior to disconnecting any SRS electrical connector or servicing any system components or other components located near an SRS electrical connector, the system must be disarmed. Refer to "Air Bag System" Disarming & Arming for procedure.

1. On models equipped with microprocessor radios, always switch radio off before disconnecting or connecting battery ground cable to prevent damage to radio.
2. On all models, when disconnecting or connecting SRS electrical connectors, the ignition switch must be in the off position and the battery ground cable must be disconnected.
3. The contact reel must not be turned more than three turns in either direction as damage to contact reel may result.
4. When making welding repairs, always disconnect the driver side air bag, passenger side air bag and seat belt tensioner electrical connectors.
5. When preforming service operations on or near front seat the transport safety device must be connected to SIPS sensor.
6. SRS components must not be opened or repaired. Always install new components.
7. Air bag modules, seat belt tensioners and sensor units have an expiration date. This date can be found on a sticker located on the center console door or the lefthand B pillar.
8. Gold plated connector terminals cannot be repaired. If lead becomes dislodged from connector, the wiring harness must be replaced.
9. SRS wiring cannot be repaired or spliced. If damaged, replace wiring harness.
10. Do not use ohmmeter or other current producing device to measure resistance.
11. Prior to checking resistance of system components or wiring, disconnect air bag modules and seat belt tensioners.
12. If air bag module, seat belt tensioner or sensor unit has been dropped, do not install component into vehicle.
13. Do not leave an undeployed air bag module or seat belt tensioner unattended if work is interrupted. Install into vehicle as soon as unit is removed from packaging.
14. Always place a removed air bag module so that the horn pad or air bag cover is facing upward.
15. Air bag modules and seat belt tensioners must not be exposed to grease, or cleaned with any type of cleansing agent.
16. Do not expose air bag modules or seat belt tensioners to high temperatures even for brief periods. Keep unit clear of all heat sources.
