Valve Clearance: Adjustments
NOTE: Special Tools Required:5022, 5026.
Upper Engine View:
CHECK VALVE CLEARANCE
Remove ignition cables from spark plugs.
Remove valve cover.
Crankshaft Pulley Markings:
Position camshaft at TDC for cylinder 1:
- Cam lobes for cyl. 1 must point obliquely upwards.
- Pulley ignition mark must be at O°.
NOTE: Always use center bolt to rotate crankshaft.
Checking Valve Clearance:
Measure and note valve clearance for cyl. 1.
NOTE: Same clearance for intake and exhaust valves.
Clearance when checking:
Cold engine: 0.30-0.40 mm (0.012-0.016 in)
Hot engine: 0.35-0.45 mm (0.014-0.018 in)
Valve Adjustment Sequence:
Check and note valve clearance of remaining cylinders:
- Turn crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and check cyl. 3
- Turn crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and check cyl. 4
- Turn crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and check cyl. 2
ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
Clearance when adjusting:
Cold engine: 0.35-0.40 mm (0.014-0.016 in)
Hot engine: 0.40-0.45 mm (0.016-0.018 in)
Turn camshaft to "clearance checking" position.
Remove adjustment washer:
- Rotate the tappets so that the groove is completely to side.
- Use press tool 5022 to depress tappets.
- Use pliers 5026 to remove washer.
Washer (Shim) Selection Example:
Valve Washer (Shim) Measurement:
Select adjustment washer of correct thickness:
- Washers are available in thicknesses of 3.30-4.50 mm (0.13-0.18 in) at increments of 0.05 mm (0.002 in).
- Only use new washers.
- Use micrometer to measure thickness of old washer.
Valve Washer (Shim) Installation:
Oil and install new washer:
- Turn washer with marking pointing downwards.
Remove press tool 5022
- Turn engine over a few times with starter motor.
- Then check clearance again.
- Adjust if necessary.
Valve Cover & Gasket:
REINSTALL:
Install valve cover:
- Use new gasket.
