Steering shaft bearing on bulkhead
A new steering shaft bearing housing. P/N 6848383-3, will be introduced in production in week 9405. The new component will have a new design of bolted joint and a new type of gasket extending around the bolts. The new housing will also be the spare stocked for earlier cars.
The new housing is introduced:
944 as from chassis number 171770
945 as from chassis number 114979

Procedure for replacing steering shaft bearing on cars with new bearing housing:
See Service Manual pages 51-62, procedure F1-F55, for instructions regarding replacement of the steering shaft bearing on the bulkhead.
The method is basically the same as described in the manual, with the following additional instructions for installing the new housing:
- Remove backing paper from gasket and install bearing housing.
- Install housing using three M6 x 7.7 nuts, P/N 968761-7 and tighten to 5 Nm (3.5 ft lb.).

Procedure for replacing steering shaft bearing on cars with earlier type of bearing housing:
The method is basically the same as described in Service Manual pages 51-62, procedure F1-F55, with the following additional instructions for installing the new bearing housing:
- Drill out existing three holes in firewall to 19/64 in.
- Remove backing paper from gasket and install bearing housing.
- Install housing using three M6 x 7.7 nuts. P/N 968761-7 and tighten to 5 Nm (3.5 ft.lb.).
