Drivers & Passengers Air Bag & Front Seat Belt Tensioner
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), consists of inflatable air bag assemblies, mounted in the center of the steering wheel and in the right hand portion of the instrument panel. The rear of each assembly incorporates a gas generator which inflates the airbag. A crash sensor records deceleration of the car. A standby power unit supplies the system with power to inflate the bag if the normal power supply
is interrupted.

Front seat belt tensioners are also used. The tensioners are
activated at the same time the air bags are deployed. Upon activation, the
front seat belt tensioners will take up any slack in the belt to restrict
the forward movement of the driver and passenger. The system also includes
a knee bolster.

If deceleration recorded by the crash sensor is sufficiently
high, the unit delivers a current which triggers the gas generator, producing
a quantity of non-toxic nitrogen which fills the air bag and triggers the
tensioners. Immediately after the collision, the gas is released through a
ventilation hole and the bag slowly collapses.
