Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures

LOW RPM AND LOW CURRENT DRAW

1. Discharged battery.
2. High resistance, caused by dirt in communicator.
3. Worn brushes or spring force.

LOW RPM AND HIGH CURRENT DRAW

1. Short circuit in coil.
2. Armature drags against pole shoes due to worn bushing(s) or bent shaft.

HEAVY SPARKING, LOW RPM

1. Weak spring force due to worn brushes or springs.
2. Short circuit or open circuit in armature coil.

DRIVE RETURNS TO THE REST POSITION BEFORE BREAK IN VOLTAGE

1. Poor connection at terminal 50 or fault in control solenoid.

DRIVE DOES NOT RETURN TO REST WHEN VOLTAGE IS INTERRUPTED

1. The drive is jammed on the armature shaft.

CONTROL SOLENOID ENGAGES BUT THE STARTER MOTOR DOES NOT

1. Defective control solenoid.
2. Poor connection at carbon brushes.
3. Open circuit in field coil.
4. Armature seized in bushing.

LONG OVERRUN TIME FOR STARTER MOTOR WHEN IGNITION KEY IS RELEASED

1. Worn brushes.
2. Weak brush spring force.

CONTROL SOLENOID DOES NOT ENGAGE

1. Defective control solenoid.
2. Fault in circuit between terminal 50 on starter motor and ignition switch.
3. Faulty ignition switch.
