Cylinder Head, Removal


Special Tools:
- Counterhold tool No. 999 5199, or equivalent

Procedure





1. Remove camshaft pulleys:
- Mark pulleys with a felt-tip pen or similar (intake and exhaust).
- Use counterhold 999 5199, or equivalent.

Important: Do not rotate camshaft pulleys when removing timing belt, as this may damage the valves.





2. Remove upper half of cylinder head:
- Install tools No. 999 5453-9 or 999 5408-3, or equivalent to secure the front of the camshafts
- Install tools No. 999 5154-7, or equivalent with a clearance of a few millimeters (inches) between them and the camshaft housing cover
- Remove all bolts from center outward
- Carefully knock the cover up at all the corners using puller tool No. 999 5402-6, or equivalent.
- Open and remove tools No. 999 5454-7, or equivalent little by little to ensure an even hit.





3. Remove camshafts:
- Twist and lift camshafts simultaneously (do not damage axial bearings).





4. Remove cylinder head:
- Undo bolts (inside and out).
- Remove cylinder head and gasket from engine block.





5. Clean joint faces:
- Clean joint faces on upper and lower halves of cylinder head.
Use gasket remover part No. 1 161 340-3, or equivalent.
- Scrape surfaces clean carefully using a plastic putty knife.
- Rinse with water and dry surfaces with alcohol.

NOTE: A fume hood or extractor must be used when using gasket remover.
