Fault Tracing, Air-Conditioning System

CAUTION: Before commencing work, read and observe general repair instructions, air conditioning (A/C) system. Service and Repair

NOTE:
- When draining the system: always use an R134a draining/recycling unit (Volvo Part Number 9511000-3 or equivalent).
- When fault tracing, ambient temperature is assumed to be at least 18 °C (64 °F) or over.

Fault-tracing, Air-conditioning (A/C) System:
Unwanted noise may occur in the A/C system. To rectify this, refer to the fault-tracing chart. Tracing Unwanted Noise In the Air-Conditioning System

Start Fault Tracing By Making The Following Basic Tests And Performance Tests:
Check that:
- The compressor drive belt is OK.
- The fan motor runs at all speeds.
- The temperature vents shut completely with the temperature switch in the "Full cooling" position.
- All air comes from the panel vents with the mode control on "Ventilation".
- The Recirculation motor is working.
- The condenser is free of dirt, insects etc.
- The radiator fan is working.
- The compressor switches on in the A/C setting. (Car engine must be running). It the compressor does not start, or runs intermittently, see "Part 127" below.
Performance test, settings and actions:(Part 119)
- Set temperature switch to full cooling.
- Set A/C switch to ON.
- Mode control to "Ventilation".
- Set recirculation switch to "recirculation".
- Set fan switch to nearly full speed.
- Close bonnet (hood).
- Close doors and windows.
- Run engine at 1500 - 1600 rpm.
- Put a thermometer in one of the center panel vents.
- Allow system to stabilize for at least 8 minutes.
- Now check temperature in center panel vent. Go to "Part 120" (below).
