Cleaning and Greasing Components

Cleaning And Greasing Engine Control Module Connector
- Ignition off.
- Wait approx. 150 seconds.
- Remove engine control module (ECM).
- Check engine control module connector for contact resistance or oxidation and remedy.
- Reinstall the engine control module.

^ Proceed to test step below.

Cleaning And Greasing Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
- Check engine coolant temperature sensor connector for contact resistance or oxidation and remedy.
- Connect the engine coolant temperature sensor.

^ Proceed to test step below.

Checking Engine Coolant Temperature
- Ignition on.
- Select scrolling values.
- Check that the engine coolant temperature sensor reading is within bounds.
- Engine coolant temperature should be above 80°C when the engine is warm, the upper radiator hose should be hot.

If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to test step below.

If reading is incorrect:
^ Try a new engine coolant temperature sensor.
^ Then proceed to test step below.

Cleaning And Greasing The Camshaft Position Sensor Connector
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
- Check camshaft position sensor connector for contact resistance or oxidation and remedy.
- Connect the camshaft position sensor.

^ Proceed to test step below.

Checking The Engine Speed Sensor
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the engine speed (RPM) sensor.
- Connect an ohmmeter between engine speed sensor connector terminals 1 and 2.
- The ohmmeter should read approx. 200 - 500 ohms depending on engine coolant temperature.

If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to test step below.

If reading is incorrect:
^ Try a new engine speed sensor.
^ Then proceed to test step below.

Cleaning And Greasing The Engine Speed Sensor Connector
- Ignition off.
- Engine speed sensor disconnected.
- Check engine speed sensor connector for contact resistance or oxidation and remedy.
- Connect the engine speed sensor.

^ Proceed to test step below.

Checking Ignition Coil Primary Winding
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect one of the cable terminals on the ignition coil.
- Connect an ohmmeter between two primary winding terminals (1 and 15).
- The ohmmeter should read 0.5 - 1.5 ohms at +20°C.

If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to test step below.

If reading is incorrect:
^ Try a new ignition coil.
^ Then proceed to Cleaning And Greasing Ignition Discharge Module Connector section below.

Checking Ignition Coil Secondary Winding
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect ignition coil HT lead.
- Connect an ohmmeter between ignition coil terminal 15 and HT terminal.
- The ohmmeter should read approx. 8 - 9K ohms at +20°C.

If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to test step below.

If reading is incorrect:
^ Try a new ignition coil.
^ Then proceed to test step below.
