Passenger Module Replacement

Preparations




- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio installed.
- Ignition off.




- Disconnect battery negative lead.

Removing Glove Compartment




- Swing down glove compartment lid.
- Remove arms (x 2) from glove compartment lid. Insert a small screwdriver between arm and lid, and prise out arm.
- Remove glove compartment insert (6 x Torx 25).

Removing Connector From Passenger Module

WARNING: The battery should not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniter connector is removed or installed.




Remove:
- SRS ignition cable igniter connector from the underside of the passenger module.

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.

Removing Screw From Passenger Module Mounting




- Remove screws (4 x Torx 10 mm) from passenger module mounting. The screws are located on top of the glove compartment.

Removing Of Dashboard Vents




Remove:
- plug and screws (2 x Torx 25) from the side defroster dashboard vent on the driver's side and the side defroster dashboard vent on the passenger side. See (1) in figure which shows left side.




Remove:
- side defroster dashboard vent driver's side.
- the two center dashboard vents.
When removing dashboard vents. Twist vents downwards and pull out or carefully pry with a screwdriver at the side and pull out.

Removing Loudspeakers




Remove:
- loudspeaker grilles, left and right.
- plastic plugs (2) from loudspeakers, left and right. Press the center of the plastic plug to loosen it before removing.
- loudspeakers, left and right.
- connectors from loudspeakers, left and right.
- screws Torx 25 by right loudspeaker. See (2) in figure.

Removal Of Cover (With Passenger Module)

NOTE: Screws marked 1 and 2 in the figure must be removed in accordance with operations above.

Remove mounting screws (9 x Torx 25) from the cover as follows:





Remove:
- cover and screws (2) on each A-pillar.
- screws (1) above left side defroster dashboard vent.
- screws (2) above the combined instrument.
- screws (2) above center dashboard vents.
- screws (2) above the glove compartment.
- cover (with passenger module).

CAUTION: If a cover with a non-deployed passenger module is removed temporarily, it should be placed top uppermost in a protected place.

Removal Of Passenger Module From Cover

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.

The module is secured to the cover with 8 screws and 6 nuts.

NOTE: Only remove the screws and nuts indicated in the figure.




Remove:
- screws (8 x Torx 25).
- nuts (6 x 8 mm).
- passenger module from cover.


WARNING: The passenger module must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle.

Replacing An SRS Ignition Cable For A Deployed Passenger Module





WARNING: If the airbag module has been activated, the SRS ignition cable should also be replaced. The SRS ignition cable igniter connector may be damaged by the heat generated by deployment.

If replacing a non-deployed passenger module:
During routine service for example, the SRS ignition cable need not be replaced.
- Continue with installing the passenger module in the cover.

If replacing a deployed passenger module:
After a collision for example, the SRS ignition cable must be replaced as follows:




- Disconnect the 2 pin connector 24/33 on the passenger module SRS ignition cable.
- Cut off cable grips.
- Remove SRS ignition cable.




- Install new SRS ignition cable.
- Connect the 2 pin connector 24/33 on the passenger module SRS ignition cable.
- Replace cable grips.

Installing The Passenger Module In The Cover

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.




- Ensure that the two retaining bands are folded into the cover so that they are not trapped when the passenger module is being installed. A small piece of double-sided tape can be used between the retaining band an the cover. Install a piece of tape if there is not one there.

NOTE: When installing, the retaining band must not be trapped between the passenger module and the edge.

- Install passenger module in the cover
- Install screws (8 x Torx 25) and nuts (6 x 8 mm). Module nut tightening torque = 6 Nm (4.5 ft. lbs.). Module screw tightening torque = 3 Nm (2.2 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: Always use new screws and nuts when installing the module.

Tightening order:




- Follow the tightening order shown. First tighten the screws and then the nuts.

Installing SRS Airbag Date Decal

NOTE: Do not forget to replace the passenger module decal on the driver's side "B" post with the new label supplied with the module.




- Install the decal with the new date for the passenger side airbag.

Installing Cover (With Passenger Module)




- Install cover with (passenger module).
Install mounting screws (9 x torx 25) for the cover as follows.
Install:
- cover and screws (2) on each "A" post.
- screws (1) above left side defroster dashboard vent.
- screws (2) above the combined instrument.
- screws (2) above center dashboard vents.
- screws (2) above the glove compartment.

NOTE: Screws marked 1 and 2 in the figure are installed in the following operation.

Installing Loudspeaker




Install:
- speaker connectors, left and right.
- loudspeakers, left and right.
- plastic plugs (2) to loudspeakers, left and right.
- screws Torx 25 by right loudspeaker. See (2) in figure.
- loudspeaker grilles, left and right.

Installing Dashboard Vents




Install:
- the two center dashboard vents.
- side defroster dashboard vent driver's side.
- plug and screws (Torx 25) to the side defroster dashboard vent on the driver's side and the side defroster dashboard vent on the passenger side. See (1) in figure which shows left side.

Installing Passenger Module Mounting Screws




- Install screws (4 x 10 mm) for passenger module mounting. The screws are located on top of the glove compartment. Passenger module tightening torque = 7Nm (5 ft. lbs.).

Connecting Connector To Passenger Module

WARNING: The battery should not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniter connector is removed or installed.




Install:
- SRS ignition cable igniter connector to the underside of the passenger module.

Installing Glove Compartment




Install:
- glove compartment insert (6 x Torx 25).
- two glove compartment lid arms.

Final Check

WARNING: Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

When all components have been reinstalled:




- Switch the ignition to position II.




- Connect battery negative lead.

Check Any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)




- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) CHECK FOR DTCs.
