Drive Belt: Description and Operation

The auxiliaries (alternator. servo pump and AC compressor) are driven by a multiple V belt which is tensioned by a mechanical tensioner All of the auxiliaries are mounted on a bracket on the left-hand side of the cylinder block

The mechanical tensioner consists of a spring and friction element. The element provides the inertia necessary to accommodate the minor oscillations and variations in speed which occur during normal running, while the spring maintains the correct tension regardless of wear or temperature.
