Strng Wheel Module, Strng Wheel,, Contact Reel - Replacement

Special Tools:
- 998 8695

Preparations




- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio installed.
- Ignition off.




- Disconnect battery negative lead.

Removing Steering Wheel Module

WARNING: The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is removed or replaced.




- Ignition in position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.
Adjust the steering column to a comfortable and accessible working position.




- Undo screws (2 x Torx 30) in countersunk holes on back of steering wheel. The screws should not be removed, they should remain in the countersunk holes on the steering wheel.
Turn the steering wheel (90° in both directions) to access the screws.
If, due to damaged Torx slots or threads, the screws cannot be removed normally as above, they must be drilled out.




- Carefully lift out the steering wheel module and remove the connector from the back of the module.
- Remove module.

WARNING:
- The steering wheel module must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle. Follow instructions for handling a replaced module.

Technician Safety Information

- Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.





CAUTION: When removing a non-deployed steering wheel module (when replacing the steering wheel or contact reel for example) the module should be placed with its metal side (rear) downwards somewhere where it will not be handled carelessly (in the luggage compartment for example).

Connecting Special Tool 998 8695




- Install special tool 998 8695 to SRS ignition cable igniter connector
This is so the car can be driven without the SRS on-board diagnostic (OBD) system posting a DTC.
If the ignition is switched on when neither steering wheel module nor special tool are connected, an open circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be posted. (Diagnostic trouble codes (DTC)s must be cleared.)

Undo But Do Not Remove The Steering Wheel Center Bolt




- Undo the steering wheel center bolt (with an 18 mm socket wrench), but do not remove it
It should be possible to unscrew the bolt by hand in the next operation,

Center Front Wheels
Align the front wheels to point straight ahead.




- Connect battery negative lead.




- Drive the car on a level surface so that the front wheels point straight ahead.

NOTE: Work that requires the removal of the steering wheel/contact reel should be carried out with the front wheels pointing straight ahead.


WARNING: Do not drive the car further than necessary to align the front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed.

Removing The Steering Wheel Center Bolt

NOTE: This operation should be carried out without changing the position of the steering wheel (front wheel alignment).

Remove:




- battery negative lead.




- special tool, 998 8695.




- bolt from steering wheel center.

Locking The Contact Reel




- Remove screw Torx 20 from its parking hole (A) in the steering wheel. Do not detach the screw from the plastic strip.
- Install the screw into the locking position (B) in the contact reel.
The contact reel is now locked (secured).

CAUTION: Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will break off.

Removing The Steering Wheel

CAUTION: Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will break off.




- Lift off the steering wheel without turning it. Pull the cabling and the contact reel through the hole in the steering wheel.

Removing Steering Wheel Covers
Remove:




- steering wheel adjustment screws (Allen screws 3 mm) from the lower cover.
- the steering wheel adjustment control.
- screws (4 x Torx 15) from the outer holes on the corners of the lower cover.
- screws (2 x Torx 25) from lower cover inner holes.
- ignition key.
- upper and lower cover from the steering column.

Removal Of Contact Reel
Remove:




- SRS ignition cable connector (2-pin).
- screws (3 x Torx 25).
- contact reel. Lift it out carefully.
- signal horn cable connector (1-pin).

Installing Contact Reel




- Check that the locking screw is in the contact reel as illustrated.
If the locking screw is not in the locking position, the contact reel must be zeroed again.

NOTE: A new contact reel is zeroed at the factory and supplied with the locking screw installed. Zeroed" means that the steering wheel can be turned to full lock in either direction without damaging the contact reel.

Install:




- signal horn cable connector (1-pin).
- SRS ignition cable connector (2-pin).
- contact reel (3 x Torx 25). Ensure that the cabling is not trapped. Contact reel tightening torque = 2.5 Nm (1.8 ft. lbs.).
- Apply contact grease to the horn contact ring to ensure good contact in the signal cabling.

Installing Steering Wheel Covers
Install:




- Lower cover on steering column.
- Screws (2 x Torx 25) to lower cover inner holes.
- Upper cover on steering column.
- Screws (4 x Torx 15) to the outer holes on the corners of the lower cover.
- The steering wheel adjustment control.
- Steering wheel adjustment screws (Allen screws 3 mm) to the lower cover.

Installing Steering Wheel

CAUTION: Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will break off.




- Pull the cabling and the contact reel through the hole in the steering wheel.
- Install the steering wheel straight, without turning it.

NOTE: The steering wheel must be installed in the correct position in relation to front wheel alignment.

- Check that the steering wheel was installed straight. If the steering wheel was not installed straight, it must not be turned on the steering column. Remove it carefully without turning it and try again.

Installing Steering Wheel Center Bolt

CAUTION: Do not use any tool. Tighten the bolt with your fingers. The steering wheel must never be turned while the contact reel is locked.




- Install steering wheel center bolt.

Unlocking The Contact Reel




- Remove the screw from its locking position (B) in the contact reel. Do not detach the screw from the plastic strip.
- Install the screw into the parking hole (A) in the steering wheel.
The contact reel is now unlocked (unsecured) and the steering wheel can be turned.

Checking Alignment Of Steering Wheel/front Wheels




- Connect special tool 998 8695.




- Connect battery negative lead.




- Drive the car slowly onto a level surface.
- Carefully turn the steering wheel and check that it can be turned to full lock in each direction.
- Check that the steering wheel is in the correct position in relation to the alignment of the front wheels, by slowly driving the car straight forwards and/or backwards.

WARNING: Do not drive the car further than necessary to check the alignment of the steering wheel/front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed.

If alignment steering wheel/front wheels OK:
- Continue with tightening the steering wheel center bolt when the steering wheel is straight.

If the steering wheel is not straight:
- Align so that the front wheels point straight forwards in accordance with EB5.
- Lock the contact reel and remove the steering wheel.
- Continue with EB13.

If the steering wheel cannot be turned to full lock:
- Align so that the front wheels point straight forward.
- Lock the contact reel and remove the steering wheel.
- Zero the contact reel. Passenger Module Replacement
- Repeat alignment procedure.

Tightening The Steering Wheel Center Bolt When The Steering Wheel Is Straight




- Tighten the steering wheel center bolt (with socket wrench 18 mm).
Steering wheel center bolt tightening torque = 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).

Installing Steering Wheel Module

WARNING: The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is removed or replaced.




- Ignition off.




- Disconnect battery negative lead.




- Remove special tool 998 8695.

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag.




- Ignition in position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.




- Place the lower edge of the steering wheel module on the steering wheel (1).
- Connect SRS ignition cable igniter connector (2) to the module.
- Fold module up into the steering wheel (3). Check that the SRS ignition cable is not trapped.




- Screw the module in place from behind. Screws (2 x Torx 30) in countersunk holes on steering wheel.
- Turn the steering wheel to access the screws. Steering wheel module screw tightening torque = 8 Nm (5.9 ft. lbs.).

CAUTION: Tighten the right screw first. This is important for the operation of the signal horn.

Installing SRS Airbag Date Decal





NOTE:: Do not forget to replace the steering wheel module decal on the driver's side "B" post with the new label supplied with the module.

- Install the decal with the new date for the driver's side airbag. Located on the driver's side "B" post.
The date decal is supplied with the new steering wheel module.

Final Check

WARNING: Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

When all components have been reinstalled:



- Switch the ignition to position II.




- Connect battery negative lead.

Check operation:
- Check that the steering wheel can be turned easily
- Check that the horn is working by pressing the four corners of the steering wheel module.

Check Any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)




- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and check for DTCs.
