Steering Column: Service and Repair

TOOL REQUIRED
- 998 8695 SRS Test Instrument
- Or Equivalent

WARNING: Take the recommended precautions when working with the SRS System. The Battery must not Be connected and ignition switched on when the Steering Wheel Module is removed or replaced. This is to prevent the Airbag deploying accidentally.

1. Removing steering wheel.




2. Remove soundproofing panel and knee bolster.
- Allow knee bolster bracket to remain on the knee bolster and remove the bracket from the floor instead.




3. Removing steering wheel covers as follows:
- Steering wheel adjusting lever screw from lower cover.
- The steering wheel adjustment control.
- Screws (4 x Torx 15) from outer holes at corners of lower cover.
- Screws (2 x Torx 25) from lower cover inner holes.
- Ignition key.
- Upper and lower cover from steering shaft.




4. Remove contact reel and switch as follows:
- Connector (2-pin) for SRS ignition cable
- Screws (3 x Torx 25)
- Contact reel, lift out carefully
- Connector (1-pin) for the signal cable
- Intermittent wiper switch
- Turn signal lamp switch




5. Remove connector and sealing plate as follows:
- Sealing plate around steering column channel (4 screws).
Fold up the upper plate as illustrated.
- Connector to ignition switch.




6. Removal as applied to cars with electronic immobilizes (If equipt.).
- Remove the antenna ring from the ignition switch.
- The connector need not be removed.




7. Removal as applied to cars with ignition switch interlock (If equipt.):
- Put gear selector in position P.
- Turn the ignition switch to position I or II.
- Release the cable.




8. Remove the ignition switch.
- Turn the ignition switch to position I.
- Take a 2 mm drift or similar.
- Press in the catch in the lock cylinder.
- Withdraw the lock.




9. Expose the steering shaft, remove the following:
- Locking pin, screw and nut on the upper steering shaft joint.
- Locking pin on upper screw for lower joint.
- Loosen the nut.
- Release the lower steering shaft from the steering column by sliding the steering shaft towards the steering gear.




10. Remove steering column as follows:
- The four steering column mounting screws.
- Steering column.




11. Lubricate steering column.
- Lubricate the lower part of the steering column with petroleum jelly.




12. Carefully slide the steering column down through the rubber grommet in the cowl panel.
- Install the four M8 screws.
- Tighten to 24 Nm (17.7 ft. lbs.).




13. Install the lower steering shaft with steering column.
- Use new locking nut.
- Tighten to 24 Nm (17.7 ft. lbs.). Install locking pins.




14. Install sealing rings around the steering column channel.
- Ensure that the rubber gaskets are correctly positioned.




15. Installing as applies to cars with ignition switch interlock:
- Turn the ignition switch to position I or II.
- Press the cable into place in ignition switch.
Ensure that the cable locking tabs are securely engaged in ignition lock.




16. Installing as applies to cars with electronic immobilizer.
- Install the antenna ring onto the ignition switch.
Ensure that the connector engages properly.




17. Installing ignition switch, install as follows:
- The ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to position I.
- Press the catch down with a drift or similar.
- Connector to ignition switch.
18. Installing switch, install as follows:
- Intermittent wiper switch.
- Turn signal lamp switch.




19. Installing contact reel.
- Check that the locking screw is positioned in the contact reel as illustrated.
- If the locking screw is in the locked position or if the locking screw is removed the contact reel must be zeroed.

NOTE:
- A new contact reel is zeroed at the factory and supplied with the locking screw installed.
- "Zeroed" means that the steering wheel can be turned to full lock in either direction without damaging the contact real.




20. Install contact reel as follows:
- Connector (1-pin) for signal cable.
- Connector (2-pin) to SRS ignition cable.
- Contact reel (3 x Torx 25 screws).
Ensure that the cabling is not trapped.
Tighten contact reel to: 2.5 Nm (1.8 ft. lbs.).
- Apply contact grease to the horn contact ring to ensure good contact in the signal cable.




21. Installing steering wheel covers as follows:
- Lower cover on steering column.
- Screws (2 x Torx 25) to the inner holes.
- Upper cover onto steering shaft.
- Screws (4 x Torx 15) to outer holes at corners of lower cover.
- The steering wheel adjustment control.
- Steering wheel adjustment screws (allen screws 3 mm) to the lower cover.
22. Install steering wheel
23. Install airbag steering wheel module.




24. Reinstall knee bolster and soundproofing panel as follows:
- Knee bolster
Tighten screw/nut 6 mm: 8 Nm (5.9 ft. lbs.) and 8 mm: 20 Nm (14.8 ft. lbs.).
- (Lighting connector in the soundproofing panel if removed.)
- Soundproofing panel.
25. Final check after reinstalling removed components.
