Ball Joint: Service and Repair

TOOL REQUIRED
- 951 2050 Protractor
- 981 2560 Gimmy Bar
- 981 4031 Torque Socket

1. Raise the car and remove the front wheel





2. Detach ball-joint, then remove:
- The ball joint stud retainer
- The control arm/ball-joint nut.
- The ball-joint screws





3. Tap the control arm loose from the ball joint.
- Use a gimmy bar
- Remove the ball joint





4. Install new ball joint:
- Use new screws to the stub axle and new lock nuts to the control arm.
- Tighten ball-joint nuts alternately to 30 Nm (22.1 ft. lbs.).
- Install the control arm nut.
Tighten nut to 70 Nm (51.7 ft. lbs.).
- Install the ball joint stud retainer.

CAUTION: Angle-tighten ball-joint screws to 90°.

5. Install wheel.
- Ensure that the brake disk and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean.
- Grease the hub center location dowel for the rim.
- Use rust inhibitor, P/N 1161030-0.
- Install wheel studs but do not tighten.
- Tighten crosswise to 85 Nm (62.7 ft. lbs.).
When using an impact wrench, torque socket should be used.
- Lower the car.
6. Check toe-in.
