Shift Interlock Solenoid: Service and Repair



REPLACEMENT OF SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID, 740, 940/940SE, 960

Disconnect:






- control rod from selector lever extension arm reaction arm
- connector on cars with AW 70/71

(940SE/960 only)






Remove:
- Left side underdash panel.
- Work loose from other attachments.
- Work out right hand soundproofing from propeller shaft tunnel.
- Front mounting screws on right and left-hand sides of center console.






- Before proceeding, tape gear selector lever with masking tape, otherwise it may become scored as housing is removed.
- Ashtray
- Screws in frame around gear selector lever and handbrake
- Center console retaining screws
- Withdraw console backwards.
- Frame around gear selector lever and handbrake. Disconnect connector(s) at gear selector. (One connector on 940SE/960; more than one on 740 and 940.)

Note! Do not disconnect the 4 pole yellow or 2 pole orange SRS connector

- Remove selector housing screws, and lift out housing and selector assembly.






- Move gear selector to position P and unclip shift lock solenoid using screwdriver as illustrated.






- Withdraw solenoid forward/upward from housing.






- Install new solenoid and press home retaining clip.
- Move gear selector lever to position P and install shift lock solenoid in lower mounting.
- Press solenoid backwards until it snaps into upper mounting.






- Reinstall housing and reconnect connector(s).
- Reconnect reaction arm and control rod (washer and clip).
- Reconnect connector on cars with AW 70/71
- Check that selector lever clearance between positions D and N is the same as between 2 and 1 (applies to 740, 940, 940SE).
- On 960, clearance between D and N should be the same as between 3 and L.
- If required, adjust.






- With ignition on, check that gear selector lever cannot be moved from P position. Operate brake pedal and check that lever can be moved to select gear positions.

Install:
- handbrake console
- frame around gear selector lever and handbrake
- underdash panel
