The use of electrical surge arresters when performing body repairs with arc welding equipment is not permitted

It has been called to our attention that some equipment manufacturers are promoting the use of "Electrical Surge Arresters" when performing arc welding repairs to vehicles. These devices are connected to the vehicle's electrical system to "prevent damage to electronic components".

Volvo has specific repair procedures for arc welding repairs, which are detailed in Volvo service manuals. Only Volvo recommended procedures should be used in the repair of Volvo vehicles. If the use of such equipment impairs the vehicle electronic systems or leads to consequential damage to components due to excessive current flow, the repairs will not be covered by Volvo.

Listed below are the recommended procedures for preventing electronic component damage while arc welding.

1. To avoid closed circuits, remove the negative battery lead.

2. To avoid ground potentials for different control units, place the welding ground lead as close as possible to the welding spot.

3. If welding is to take place close to any control unit, one should remove the unit just to avoid the risk for heat damage.

Please ensure that all personnel within your dealership, body repair facilities and wholesale customers are aware of this information.
