Checking Ignition Coils
Checking Ignition Coils
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect all ignition coils.
- Connect an ohmmeter between terminals 1 and 2 on each ignition coil.
- The ohmmeter should read 0 - 2 ohms for all readings
If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to: Checking Spark Plugs section below.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Try a new ignition coil.
Checking Spark Plugs
- Remove all the spark plugs.
- Check spark plug color.
NOTE: It is vital that the correct spark plugs are used, see parts catalogue for P/N. Check the spark gap of new plugs before they are fitted. Spark gap should be 0.7 - 0.8 mm (0.028 - 0.032 in).
- Is one plug lighter than the others?
Yes:
^ This indicates that its cylinder is receiving too little fuel.
^ Try a new injector.
No:
^ Proceed to: Checking Compression section below.
Checking Compression
- Carry out a compression test.
- Is compression OK?
Yes:
^ Proceed to: Checking Fuel and Residual Pressures section below.
No:
^ Remedy as necessary.
Checking Fuel and Residual Pressures
- Check fuel and residual pressure.
- Are fuel and residual pressures OK?
Yes:
^ Proceed to: Checking Engine Coolant Temperature.
No:
^ Remedy as necessary.
