Test Drive Schedule, Description

Test Drive Form, description
This schedule is intended to provide guidelines for test driving a car to evaluate complaints about the 4T65EV, 4T65EV-GT and 4T65AWD automatic transmissions.
Please observe speed limits.

Before the test drive
- Check the oil level in the transmission before test driving. See Oil level, checking Checking Oil Level
- Check that the gear selector cannot be moved with the ignition off
- Check that the gear selector cannot be moved with the ignition on and the brake pedal unaffected.
Check the operation of the park / neutral position (PNP) switch
Check that the car can be started with the gear selector in positions N and P.
It must not be possible to start the car with the gear selector in any other position than P and N.
Check the gear selector positions
Check that the selector engages in each position, and that it does not try to " jump" out of the selected position.
Check that the gear selector cannot be moved to position P or N at a speed above 12 km/h.

Check the back-up gear
Back up the car in the normal way. Check that the back-up light comes on.
Check the engagement of back-up (reverse) gear. The gear should normally engage within 1.5 seconds. The engagement must be soft.
Look out for delayed or notchy engagements. If the conditions are abnormal, check if these symptoms disappear when the transmission is hot or cold.

Test driving
Warm up the transmission by driving at variable speeds for 10 to 20 minutes. Start and stop the engine a few times to warm up the engine more quickly.

Note! Never warm up the transmission by braking the transmission. This may cause localized overheating and uneven temperature distribution.

Listen for mechanical noises
Start the car with the gear selector in position D. Drive the car so that the transmission shifts up and down. Listen for abnormal noises from the transmission. If any abnormal noises are audible at normal speeds, during engine braking, in different gear selector positions, at different oil temperatures, different accelerator pedal (AP) positions or different speeds, stop the test drive and return to the workshop.
Fault-trace the relevant symptoms in the symptom manager.

Check the function of the transmission while driving

Economy program (E) Sports program (S)
The software for the transmission is intended to provide the best combination of comfort, performance and economy.
The software will gradually adapt the shift pressure to ensure optimal smooth gear shifts.
If the transmission has Geartronic, slightly harsher shifting will be noticeable in Geartronic mode.
The transmission control module (TCM) also receives information about acceleration and speed. The control module will adapt the shift points for better performance (Sports mode (S)) if the driver has an aggressive driving style. The shifting points are affected by the speed at which the driver depresses the accelerator pedal (AP). When the accelerator pedal (AP) is released, the software in the transmission will return to the standard economy (E) mode. The gear shifts must be smooth, irrespective of the shifting conditions.
Start the car with the gear selector in position D. Check the shifting speeds using the lowest possible acceleration. Note any tendency to stick or slip during shifting.

Checking the kickdown function
The transmission receives a signal for activation from the accelerator pedal (AP). The kickdown function is activated when the accelerator pedal (AP) is pressed approximately 85%. The kickdown function is blocked in Geartronic mode.
Start the car with the gear selector in position D. Check the kickdown function by driving at variable speeds and fully depressing the accelerator pedal (AP) to the kickdown position (100% throttle opening). After the shift from 1st to 2nd, reduce the throttle opening to just below the kickdown threshold (85% throttle opening). Note whether the shifts slip or are harsh.
Check the kickdown function by driving at variable speeds (60 - 90 km/h) and fully pressing the accelerator pedal (AP) to the kickdown position. At lower speeds, the transmission will shift down when the kickdown function is engaged. The function is OK if the transmission downshifts on activation.
Start the car with the gear selector in position D. Depress the accelerator pedal (AP) to the kickdown position at different speeds. Check the HIGHEST speed at which the kickdown downshift occurs.
Keep the car stationary on a flat road with the gear selector in N position. Release the brake and accelerate a little. Does the car move forward?
Start in position 3. Drive until 3rd gear engages. Release the accelerator pedal. Check that there is engine braking in 1st gear. Select L position at high speed. Let the car slow down.
Check the shifting points as the car slows.
Start in position L. Increase speed. Check that there is engine braking.
Stop the car on a slope. Shift the gear selector to position P. Release the brake. Does the car move?

Winter (W)
Start the car with the gear selector in position D. Press the button for winter mode (W). The transmission should start in 2nd gear and give a smooth take-up from standstill.

Checking the lock-up function
Start by driving the car for 5-10 minutes. This is to get the oil temperature to operating temperature.
Then move the gear selector to 3rd gear. Drive the car for at least 2 minutes at an engine speed (RPM) of approximately 2500 rpm or higher. Move the gear selector to position D.
Drive the car for 3-4 minutes at speed in excess of 70 km/h.
Accelerate until the lock-up function is activated (at approximately 80 km/h). If the brake pedal is pressed when the engine speed (RPM) is below 2000 rpm, the lock-up function will be disengaged.

Adapting the shift pressure
If the transmission control module (TCM) has been replaced or if the adaptation has been erased, the shift patterns and lock-up mode will revert to default.

The following driving schedule must be followed in order to adapt the pressure to a correct level:
- Before beginning adaptation, the transmission must be at normal operating temperature (approximately 70°C)
- To adapt the shift pressure, start by accelerating 5 to 10 times with the accelerator pedal (AP) in each position, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. Hold the accelerator pedal (AP) in a set position during each acceleration and through shifts 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4
- Drive at 90 km/h for approximately 3 minutes to adapt the pressure.
