Supplementary Restraint System (SRS)

Supplementary restraint system (SRS)

As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Safety equipment (Supplemental Restraint System (SRS))

Warning! The car has pyrotechnical airbags and seat belt tensioners. The components in the SRS system must be treated very carefully during repair to avoid:

- personal injury when carrying out repairs
- damage to or malfunction of the SRS (supplemental restraint system) system.

Warning! Work on SRS (supplemental restraint system) systems must always be carried out by a qualified workshop.

See the relevant section for further information about safety and repair of the SRS (supplemental restraint system):

1. the steering wheel module (SRS). See 1. Steering wheel module (SWM) (SRS)
2. the passenger airbag module (SRS). See 2. Passenger airbag module (SRS)
3. the airbag module seat (SIPS) and sensors in the B and C posts and at the front member. See 3. Airbag module seat (SIPS)
4. the seat belts and seat belt tensioners for the front and rear seats. See 4. Seat belts and seat belt tensioners
5. the inflatable curtain (IC) module. See 5. Inflatable curtain (IC) module
6. the whiplash system. See 6. Whiplash system
7. the Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS). See 7. Supplemental restraint system control module (SRS)
8. other safety system components. See 8. Other SRS components.

Note! There are five and seven seater versions of the XC90.

1. Steering wheel module (SWM) (SRS)

The steering wheel module (SWM) is unlocked in two stages. When working on the steering wheel, steering shaft or steering gear, certain operations must be carried out according to the methods for working on the steering wheel module (SWM).

2. Passenger airbag module (SRS)

The passenger airbag module is unlocked in two stages.

3. Airbag module seat (SIPS)

3a. There are airbag modules in both the front seats.

3b. The sensors are located in the B and C-posts.

4. Seat belts and seat belt tensioners

4a. Front seat belts and seat belt tensioners (all seat versions).

4b. Rear seat belts and seat belt tensioners.

4c. Seat belt and seat belt tensioner for the center seat in the second row

5. Inflatable curtain (IC) module

Seven seater version:
5a. The inflatable curtain consists of four inflatable protective curtains positioned in the lower edge of the roof, two on each side of the car.
The front curtain shields the upper section of the car interior, from the A to the C-posts.
The rear curtain shields the upper section of the car interior, from the C to the D-posts.

Five seater versions:
5b. The inflatable curtain consists of two inflatable protective curtains positioned in the lower edge of the roof, two on each side of the car.
The curtain shields the upper section of the car interior, from the A to the C-posts.

6. Whiplash system

The front seats have a Whiplash function. This function reduces the risk of whiplash injuries in the event of a collision. The system is completely mechanical and is integrated in the seats.

7. Supplemental restraint system control module (SRS)

Warning! The Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS) for the XC90 has a new function, ROP (Roll Over Protection). The control module must not be removed, moved to another position or worked on unless the power supply to it is cut. If the power supply is not cut the airbags and seat belt tensioners may deploy.

The Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS) is located between the parking brake and the gear selector lever in the center console.

Note! Never install car accessories on or near the Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS).

8. Other SRS components

Wiring:
The SRS wiring is orange.
When working on SRS wiring, extra care must be taken to avoid damage to the following areas:
- the soundproofing panels
- the glove compartment
- the dashboard
- the steering shaft covers
- the ignition switch
- the sills
- The panels for the A, B, C and D posts
- the roof
- below the headlamps.

Sensor:
The collision sensors for the SRS system (six + one) are in the B and C posts, under the headlamps and in the Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS).
The collision sensors control the SRS system.

Note! Never install car accessories on or near the Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS).

Data Link Connector (DLC):
The data link connector (DLC) is in the passenger compartment.

Decals:
Safety decals must always be in the car at the relevant points. For further information see:
- Decals for safety equipment (USA)
- (rest of the world).
