Windscreen Wipers - Rain Sensor
Information and verification, windscreen wipers - rain sensor
Symptom and function description
The rain sensor senses the amount of water on the windscreen and can then activate and control the speed of the wipers automatically to obtain a good view. The rain sensor is in front of rear view mirror on the inside of the windscreen.
To activate the rain sensor the key must be in ignition position I or II, and the windscreen wipers must be switched off. The stalk for the windscreen wipers must always be in position 0.
The sensor is then activated by pressing the small button on the stalk. An LED illuminates as a confirmation that the function has been activated.
There are two ways of activating the rain sensor:
- Press the small button on the stalk again so that the LED goes out.
- Activate one of the other functions for the windscreen wipers by moving the stalk downwards.
The rain sensor function switches off automatically when the key is removed from the ignition or five minutes after the ignition has been switched off if the key has not been removed.
If there is a fault with the rain sensor during the time the function is active, intermittent wiping at high speed is selected.
If the fault occurs whilst the function is not active, intermittent wiping will be activated the next time the rain sensor function is attempted to be activated. But then only with a fixed interval and no change depending on the amount of precipitation.
Caution! Remember that the rain sensor function must be off during automatic washing. The windscreen wipers can otherwise start and become damaged.
Verification
- Switch on the ignition and ensure that the stalk for the windscreen wipers is in position 0.
- Press the button for the rain sensor and check that the LED in the button illuminates when the function is activated.
- Check that the windscreen wipers start when water hits the windscreen in front of the rain sensor.
- Check that the rain sensor function disengages by moving the stalk downwards to another wiper program. The LED on the button must go out.
