Steering gear, replacement

Special tools:

Removal

Preparations

Remove:
- the battery lead acc. to: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting
- the front wheels on both sides.

Draining the power steering fluid reservoir





Warning! Avoid skin contact with the oil.

Lift up the oil reservoir.
Place paper under the oil reservoir for any oil spillage. Position a container under the oil reservoir.
Remove the hose with the clamp from the oil reservoir.
Drain the oil.

Removing the bolts to the torque rod




Remove the bolts, x2, at the suspension turrets on both sides.

Installing the lifting tool





Note! When raising the engine make sure that the lifting eye does not scratch the torque rod. Tape the torque rod at the lifting eye.

Remove:
- the oil filler cap
- the upper front engine casing by pulling it straight up.
- Fit: the oil filler cap
- the lifting tool: 999 5716 Reading off tool 999 5716 Reading Off Tool converted with kit: 999 7070 Mounting 999 7070 Mounting and the lifting hooks: 999 5460 Lifting hook 999 5460 Lifting Hook.

Raise the engine slightly so that the engine pads are unloaded.

Removing the wing liner





Remove:
- the plastic nuts, x2
- the wing liner.

Removing the bolts to the engine pad, right




Remove the bolts (1), x2.

Removing the protective cover under the engine





Remove:
- the bolts, x6
- the protective cover under the engine.

Removing the exhaust pipes between front and rear catalytic converters





Remove:
- both exhaust pipes' nuts
- both exhaust pipes.

Removing the lower bolt to the rear engine pad




Release the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors, x2, from the subframe. Fold aside the protective plate under the steering gear to gain access to the engine pad's lower bolt. Remove the engine pad's bolt.

Removing the steering shaft joint, lower





Note! Turn the steering wheel until optimum access to the bolt is achieved. Lock the steering wheel and take out the ignition key, so that the steering wheel lock is activated.





Note! On one side, measure the length of the track rod in relation to the steering gear housing. Make a note of the measurement.

Remove:
- the bolt to the lower steering shaft joint
- the connector to the solenoid.

Removing the track rod ends





Note! Make sure that the wheels are in the straight forward position. Lock the steering wheel by removing the ignition key. Do not turn the front wheels so that the position of the steering gear is changed. This could damage the SRS system's contact reel.

Remove the track rod ends. Counterhold with a wrench so that the gaiter is not damaged.

Lowering the subframe at the rear edge





Note! Press the lower steering shaft joint up from the steering gear. Make sure that no pipes or lines are loaded or trapped when lowering.

Position a mobile jack at the rear end of the subframe.

Remove:
- the bolts to the subframe's brackets at the rear edge
- the bolts to the subframe in the rear edge
- the subframe's brackets.
Release the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) lines from the anti-roll bar. Lower the subframe carefully.

Removing the pressure pipe and return pipe from the steering gear




Remove the bolt to the bracket holding the pipe to the subframe.
Release the pipes from the clips.




Place a container under the steering gear.

Remove:
- the pipes' bolt on the valve housing
- the pipes, x2.

Removing the metal protective cover





Remove:
- the bolt holding the protective plate on the steering gear, x1
- the bolt holding the protective plate to the subframe, x1
- the protective plate.

Removing the steering gear





Remove:
- the nuts (1), x4
- the bolt (2), x1
- the steering gear through the left-hand side of the vehicle.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see Specifications [1][2]Specifications.

Installing the steering gear

Install:
- the steering gear
- the nuts (1), M10 x4
- the bolt (2), M10 x1.

Installing the metal protective cover

Install:
- the protective plate on the steering gear
- the bolt, M5, holding the protective plate on the steering gear, x1
- the bolt, M6, holding the protective plate to the subframe, x1.

Installing the oil pipes to the steering gear

Install:
- the pipes in the valve housing
- the pipes' bolts on the valve housing in accordance with: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications
- the bolt, M6, to the oil pipe bracket on the subframe
- the pipe in the clips.

Installing the subframe at the rear edge
Raise the subframe's rear edge using a mobile jack.
Install the sub-frame's four screws together with the sub-frame's brackets and engine heater, if installed.
Use new screws. Lube the screws with oil.
Tighten acc. to: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque. First tighten the screws on the sub-frame's left side, then on the right.
Tighten the screws for the brackets M10.
Install the heated oxygen sensor's cables on the anti-roll bar

Fitting the lower bolt to the rear engine pad

Hint: Unscrew the upper nut in order to facilitate fitting the lower bolt.

Install:
- the lower bolt to the engine pad, M10, x1
- the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors on the subframe, x2.
Refit the protective plate under the steering gear.

Installing the steering arms to the wheel spindles
Install the steering arms to the wheels spindles. Use new lock nuts.
Tighten, see: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications. Use 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor.

Installing the steering shaft joint, lower





Note! Always check carefully that the joint's screw hole is aligned with the slot in the steering gear's shaft.

Install:
- the lower steering shaft joint
- the bolt, M8
- the connector to the solenoid.

Installing the exhaust pipes between front and rear catalytic converters

Note! To ensure that there is no exhaust leakage, see: Flanged joint, assembling Flanged Joint, Assembling.

Install:
- both exhaust pipes
- both exhaust pipes' nuts, M8.

Installing the protective cover under the engine

Install:
- the protective cover under the engine
- the bolts, M8, x6.

Fitting the bolts to the engine pad, right
Fit the bolts, x2. Tighten in accordance with: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.

Installing the wing liner

Install:
- the wing liner
- the plastic nuts, x2.

Removing the lifting tool
Remove the lifting tool 999 5716 Reading off tool 999 5716 Reading Off Tool , kit 999 7070 Mounting 999 7070 Mounting and lifting hooks 999 5460 Lifting hook 999 5460 Lifting Hook.

Fitting the bolts to the torque rod
Fit the bolts, M10 x2, at the suspension turrets on both sides.

Filling the power steering fluid reservoir
Fit the battery cable.

Warning! Avoid skin contact with the oil.

Install:
- the hose with the clamp to the oil reservoir
- the oil reservoir.
Fill the power steering fluid reservoir.

Note! For the correct oil grade use Volvo power steering fluid, part number: 116 1529-1.

Turn the steering wheel between both end positions several times.
Check and fill with oil as necessary. Apply the parking brake. Start the engine.
A: Turn the steering wheel slowly to the right, keep it at the end position for 2 seconds.
B: Turn the steering wheel slowly to the left, keep it at the end position for 2 seconds. Repeat steps A and B 10 times.

Finishing
Remove the oil filler cap.

Install:
- the upper front engine casing
- the oil filler cap.
Fit the front wheels on both sides in accordance with: Installing wheels Service and Repair.
Carry out wheel alignment in accordance with: Wheel alignment, checking / adjusting Service and Repair.
