Rear wheel hub, replacing

Special tools:

Preparatory work

Adjusting the parking brake
Loosen the hand brake adjuster as described in: Parking brake self-adjustment, resetting, L.H.D Parking Brake Self-Adjustment, Resetting or Parking brake, adjusting Parking Brake, Adjusting.

Removal

Removal of screw for drive shaft





Remove:
- the rear wheel
- the screw for the drive shaft.

Removing the brake calliper and brake disc





Remove:
- the wheel sensor lead from the holder on the brake hose
- the brake calliper mounting screws.
Suspend the caliper with a steel wire.
- the brake disc locating pin/screw
- the brake disc.

Removing the wheel sensor




Clean around the wheel sensor and remove the screw.
Carefully remove the sensor from the stub axle.
Tie up the sensor well protected.

Installing the tensioner
Fit 999 5659 Tension caliper 999 5659 Tension Caliper as described in: Tensioner 999 5659, User instructions User Instructions.
Support the rear suspension 500 mm up between the wing edge and the centre of the wheel.

Removing the hub





Remove:
- the 4 screws
- the hub.

Note! Make sure the drive shaft comes free from the rear wheel hub. There must not be any axial forces acting on the drive shaft joints.

Cleaning

Checking and cleaning





Clean:
- drive shaft end, especially rust on the edges, see illustration.
(Outer wheel hub sealing ring will rest against this surface).
- the mating surfaces for wheel hub in stub axle
- the wheel sensor
- the seat for the sensor in the stub axle to ensure it is absolutely clean
- the wheel sensor. Use a soft brush.

Greasing the seal




Lubricate the wheel bearing sealing lip abutting the drive shaft with a little wheel bearing grease. P/N 1161689.
Brush high pressure grease, P/N 1161246 onto the drive shaft so that the splines on the rear half of the drive shaft pin are filled.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques group 5, see Tightening torque Tightening Torque or group 7 see: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Installation of hub and drive shaft

Install:
- the hub on the stub axle and drive shaft.
Use new screws. Tighten. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications
- a new screw loosely on the drive shaft. The screw will be tightened later
- the wheel sensor M6, tighten according to: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Removing the tensioner
Remove tensioner according to: Tensioner 999 5659, User instructions User Instructions.

Installing the brake disc and brake calliper

Install:
- the brake disc
- brake disc guide pin/screw M6, tighten according to: Tightening torque Tightening Torque
- the brake caliper
- the brake calliper mounting screws.
Use new screws. Tighten. See: Tightening torque Tightening Torque
- the wheel sensor lead to the holder on the brake hose.

Fitting the rear wheel
Install the screw, M10 to the drive shaft. Use a new screw. Tighten.
Fit the rear wheel according to: Installing wheels Service and Repair

Finishing

Adjusting the parking brake
Adjust the hand brake according to: Parking brake self-adjustment, resetting, L.H.D Parking Brake Self-Adjustment, Resetting or Parking brake, adjusting Parking Brake, Adjusting.
