DESCRIPTION:
Customer notes high oil consumption / bad or uneven idle.
NOTE:
This engine type is very sensitive to overfilling of oil and it is difficult to accurately check the oil level with the dipstick in an easy way, the engine oil needs time to settle in the oil sump.
^ Park vehicle on level surface
^ If the engine is warm, wait at least 20-25 minutes after the engine has been switched off before checking oil.
It is very important to follow the instructions, step by step, below:
1. If the symptoms occur in combination with the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), make a VIDA - Diagnostic Trouble Code (DIG) read out and follow the fault tracing in VIDA accordingly.
Note:
The most likely cause of some codes can come from an overfilled crankcase, it is critical that the oil level is not higher than the Maximum fill mark on the dipstick.
2. If no DIG's are present and the symptom only is high oil consumption, without external leakages, it is still likely that the root cause is the engine has been overfilled with oil. In both cases above, all spark plugs shall be removed. Compare the color of the spark plugs. If spark plugs for cylinders 1 to 4 look normal and spark plugs 5 and 6 are significantly more sooty (carbon deposits) it is even more likely that the engine has been overfilled with oil. At this point also perform a cylinder leakage test.
If the symptoms points in direction "high oil consumption due to oil overfilling" an oil consumption test shall be carried out:

Oil consumption Test
Print out and fill in the "Form for measuring oil consumption".
Use the method for weighing, but instead of weighing, measure in volume. The quantity of oil to be filled is: MY07= 7.7 L (2 gal.) MY08= 7.4 L (1.9 gal.) including oil filter.
Note:
VIDA states to replace the air filter when performing oil consumption test inspect filter and only replace if found to be obstructed with debris.
Maximum oil consumption at 1000 km (621 miles) = 0.55 L (0.58 qt).
If the test shows normal consumption values it is very important to explain to the customer how to check the oil level and how much to add, right type of oil etc. Refer customer to the procedure in Maintenance and Specification section of owners manual.
Service:
If the test shows "high oil consumption" replace the cylinder head, be sure to include the form for oil consumption test with the cylinder head core return.
Note:
Claims returned without the high oil consumption form and cylinder leakage results will be denied.
