Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Information

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information TCM-P081711

Condition
To prevent the engine from starting with a gear engaged, which would cause the vehicle to move as soon as it starts, the vehicle is equipped with a immobilizer function. Two Hall sensors integrated in the transmission control module (TCM) detect whether the selector lever is in position. Start is permitted in transmission position P or N. The transmission control module (TCM) has a directly connected signal cable to the engine control module (ECM). The signal notifies the engine control module (ECM) whether it is possible to start the engine or not. When the voltage level on the signal cable is grounded it is permitted to start.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that:
- Signal is always grounded.
The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of:
- Ignition on.

Note! The control module can only detect the fault once the test has been started and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the conditions are met.

Substitute value
- None.

Possible source
- Contact resistance in the terminals.
- Short-circuit to ground in the signal cable.
- Internal fault in the transmission control module (TCM).

Fault symptom[s]
- Engine fails to start
- Engine starts with gear lever in position R and D
