This bulletin supersedes SMB 22-001 Dated 06/01/2012

New service maintenance interval for model year 2013. The service maintenance interval is being changed from 7,500/12,000 km to 10,000 miles/16,000 km or 1 year.

This extended oil drain interval will put Volvo in line with most other European manufactures and more closely aligns with service intervals for Volvo cars in other global markets.

Claim reimbursement Part Numbers:
8889951 for Castrol
8889952 for non-Castrol

Oil specifications

It is important to note that this new drain interval will require* the use of a synthetic motor oil meeting the ACEA A5/B5, rating with a viscosity rating of 5W-30 found on the oil container labeling. This oil specification will be required* on all model year 2013 Volvo cars.

Engine oil must* meet the minimum ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) A5/B5, 5W-30 and API (American Petroleum Institute) SN.

Note:
Not all synthetic oil meets the ACEA A5/B5 requirements.

Volvo recommends the use of Castrol. Castrol motor oil meeting this specification is branded as Castrol Edge Professional 5W-30. See Volvo part numbers directly below.

Oil additives must not be used.

If Castrol branded oil is not used, then an equivalent full synthetic oil meeting the ACEA A5/B5 rating with a viscosity of 5W-30 will still be required*.

Depending on your customers driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide superior fuel economy and engine protection.

5W-30 oils that meet A5/B5 spec

Note:
The above list may not be a complete list of all available brands/products which meet the requirement. This list is subject to change without notice and is for reference only. Ensure that the oil is ACEA A5/B5 rated.

* See below for possible exceptions.

* Operation in hot climates

When temperatures exceed 104 F (40 C) in your area, Volvo recommends, for the protection of the engine, that you use a heavier weight oil, such as such as SAE 5W-40 or 0W-40.

* Operation in temperate climates
Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life. Under normal use when temperatures do not exceed 104 F (40 C), SAE 5W-30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection.

* Extreme engine operation
Synthetic oils meeting SAE 0W-30, 5w-30, or 0W-40 and complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous area.
