Timing Belt: Service and Repair

1. Set crankshaft to TDC for cylinder number 1 by aligning pointer with "0" mark on flywheel. Both valves for cylinder number 1 closed.
2. Refer to Fig. 3 for removal of timing belt cover.
3. Mark intermediate shaft so that ignition rotor points to mark on distributor housing.
4. Check that crankshaft and intermediate shaft have not moved.

5. Make sure camshaft mark (arrow) is in line with upper edge of rear drive belt cover.
6. Loosen belt tensioner and remove belt.
7. Loosely install new belt over all drive gears.

8. Loosen drive belt tensioner and turn in direction of arrow to tension belt

9. Belt is correctly tensioned when it can be twisted 90~ with thumb and index finger, between camshaft and intermediate shaft drive belt sprocket.
10. Replace all covers as shown in Fig. 3.
