Selector Mechanism Checking

Overview

1. Selector mechanism function test.

2. Ignition key removal lock, checking.

3. Locking button on selector lever handle, checking.

1. Selector Mechanism Function Test

In selector lever positions "S", "D", "R" and "Tiptronic gate" the starter motor will not operate.

If the selector lever position "N" is selected at speeds greater than 5 km/h, the selector lever lock solenoid must not engage and block the selector lever. The selector lever can be shifted into driving gear.

For speeds below 2 km/h (almost a stand still) and shifting into selector lever position "N", the shift lock solenoid must only engage after approximately 1 second. The selector lever can only be shifted out of the "N" position with the brake pedal pressed.

Selector lever in position "P" and ignition switched on:

- Do not press the brake pedal.

The selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of the "P" position while the locking button on the selector lever handle is pressed. The shift lock solenoid (N110) blocks the selector lever.

- Press brake pedal and hold.

The shift lock solenoid (N110) releases the selector lever. Selecting a driving mode is possible. With the locking button on the selector lever handle pressed, slowly shift the selector lever from "P" through "R, N, D, S"; when doing so, check whether the Transmission Range (TR) display (Y6) in the instrument cluster corresponds with the selector lever position.

Selector lever in the "N" position and ignition switched on:

- Do not press the brake pedal.

After a brief pause: The selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of the "N" position despite pressing the locking button on the selector lever handle. The shift lock solenoid (N110) blocks the selector lever.

- Press the brake pedal.

The shift lock solenoid (N110) releases the selector lever. The selection of position "D" is possible.

Selector lever in position "D", ignition switched on:

- Shift the selector lever into the "Tiptronic gate".

A lit "D" symbol in the selector lever Transmission Range (TR) position display (Y26) must go out and "+" and "-" symbols must light up.

The Transmission Range (TR) display (Y6) in the instrument cluster should switch from "PRNDS" to "654321" when the selector lever is shifted into the "Tiptronic gate".

If the specified values are not obtained:

- Perform "Guided Fault Finding" with the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B).

- Adjust the selector lever cable:

Vehicles through 11.05, refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, through 11.05 ] Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, through 11.05.

Vehicles from 11.05, refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, from 12.05 ] Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, from 12.05.

- Locking button on selector lever handle, checking.

- Check the ignition key removal lock.

2. Ignition Key Withdrawal Lock Checking

- To reach position "ignition on", briefly turn ignition key lightly toward right.

- Press the brake pedal and hold.

It must be possible to shift the selector lever out of the "P" position without "hitching" while the locking button on the selector lever handle is pressed.

- Switch ignition off.

It should not be possible to remove the ignition key when the selector lever is in any other position than "P".

- Place the selector lever in the "P" position.

- Remove the ignition key.

It must be possible to remove the ignition key only in the "P" position.

The selector lever cannot be shifted out of the "P" position with the locking button pressed and the brake pedal pressed.

If the ignition key withdrawal lock does not function as described, check the vehicle using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B) in "Guided Fault Finding".

3. Locking Button on Selector Lever Handle, Checking

Check locking button for ease of movement:

It must be possible to press the locking button without using great force.

After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back out by itself.

If the specified values are not obtained:

- Make sure the selector lever handle is installed correctly:

Vehicles through 11.05, refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

Vehicles from 11.05, refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Check whether the selector rod or the selector lever is bent.

Function test:

The ignition is switched on.

The locking button on the selector lever handle must be pressed for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot be shifted into the specified position.

"P" to "R" and also press brake pedal

"D" to "S"

"N" to "R"; in a stand still, also press brake pedal after long wait

"R" to "P"

If the specified values are not obtained:

- Make sure the selector lever handle is installed correctly:

Vehicles through 11.05, refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

Vehicles from 11.05, refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Carry out "Guided Fault Finding" using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B) and check the shift lock solenoid (N110).
