Camshaft, Measuring Axial Play

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Dial Gauge Holder (VW 387)

• Dial Gauge 0-3 mm (VAS 6080)

Procedure

- Remove the camshafts. Refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.

- Mark the assignment of the roller rocker lever for installation later.

- Remove the roller rocker lever and place it on a clean surface.

- Install the camshaft and the guide frame. Refer to => [ Camshaft Guide Frame Tightening Specifications
and Sequence ] Valvetrain Overview and tighten the old bolts to 8 Nm.

- Secure the (VW 387) with the (VAS 6079) on the cylinder head as shown in the illustration.






- Press camshaft against dial gauge by hand.

- Set dial gauge to "0".

- Press camshaft off dial gauge and read the value:

• Axial clearance: 0.100 to 0.191 mm.
