Transfer Case Gear Oil Filling after Repair
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)
• Protective glasses

CAUTION!
Do not start or tow vehicle with the self locking center differential removed or when the gear oil has been drained.
Test Conditions
• Gear oil temperature at approximately 20 °C (room temperature).
• The cover was removed from the transfer case and all the gear oil was thereby drained.
Test Sequence
- To ensure the vehicle is absolutely level, use a 4 post hoist or a service pit.
- Place the used oil collection and extraction device (VAG 1782) under the transmission.
CAUTION!
Wear protective glasses.
- Remove the inspection plug - arrow -.
• The engine must not be started and the vehicle must not be towed if there is no gear oil in the transmission!
- Slowly and evenly fill the transfer case with gear oil over a period of at least 5 minutes.
• A filling time of at least 5 minutes is required so that the internal oil level between the self locking center differential and the oil fill space can equalize.
• The inspection plug with seal must be replaced.
- Tighten the new inspection plug to 35 Nm.
• It is not necessary to check the oil level again at this stage.
