Final Drive/Transmission Housing Shaft Seal
Final Drive/Transmission Housing Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)
• Extractor lever (VW 681)
• Thrust piece (T10139)
Conditions
• Transmission removed.
• Transmission attached to assembly stand. Refer to => [ Securing Transmission to Engine and Transmission Holder ] Securing Transmission to Engine and Transmission Holder.
CAUTION!
The transmission must not be set down on the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler or oil pan.
Procedure
• A defective shaft seal will allow gear oil to enter the torque converter bellhousing.
• General repair information. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
• Rules of cleanliness for working on transmissions. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
- Place the used oil collection and extraction device (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.
- Remove the right flange shaft. Refer to => [ Right Flange Shaft ] Right Flange Shaft.
- Remove the final drive cover bolts - 11 to 1 - in sequence and remove the cover together with the tapered roller bearing outer race and shim.
• The shim must be the correct size and must not be replaced by a shim with a different thickness.
- Remove the differential.
- Remove the differential tapered roller bearing outer race - 1 - and shim - 2 - located behind it from the transmission housing by hand.
• The shim must be the correct size and must not be replaced by a shim with a different thickness.
- Remove the left flange shaft. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] Left Flange Shaft.
- Remove the shaft seal.
• The extractor lever (VW 681) must be positioned behind both sealing lips of the shaft seal. Do not position at the outer circumference of the shaft seal, otherwise the contact surface in the transmission housing will be damaged. Guide the lever carefully when prying the seal.
- Examine the shaft seal seat in the transmission housing for damage; if necessary rework.
- Coat the outer circumference and sealing lip of the shaft seal with gear oil.
• Push the shaft seal onto the pressure piece so that the projecting sealing lip of the seal faces the tool.
- Drive in the new shaft seal until seated using thrust piece (T10139).
- Insert shim - 2 - and the differential tapered roller bearing outer race - 1 - into the transmission housing until seated by hand.
• Do not tilt the shim and outer race when inserting.
- Replace the O-ring - arrow -.
- Insert the differential into the transmission housing.
If the outer race for the taper roller bearing and the shim have fallen out of the cover for the final drive:
- Lubricate the shim and outer race for the taper roller bearing with gear oil and insert into the final drive cover until seated.
- Tighten the final drive cover bolts as follows:
- Install the left flange shaft. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] Left Flange Shaft.
- Install the right flange shaft. Refer to => [ Right Flange Shaft ] Right Flange Shaft.
- Check the oil level in the front final drive. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive Gear Oil Level Checking ] Front Final Drive Gear Oil Level Checking.
