Mechatronic Unit

Removing

Automatic transmission clean working conditions, refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.

General repair instructions, refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.

Always replace the Mechatronic unit if it is dirty or faulty.

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove the ATF oil pan. Refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the ATF strainer. Refer to => [ ATF Strainer ] Service and Repair.

There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

Before touching or removing the Mechatronics unit, you must first discharge yourself of any static electricity by touching (bare handed) some grounded metal object (for example car, lifting platform).

- Touch the vehicle ground with a bare hand to discharge the static electricity.

To remove the Mechatronic, first remove the connector - C - and the wiring harness - B - from the mechatronic. The wiring harness connector - A - remains installed in the transmission housing.

If the tab - arrow - on the backside of the wiring harness breaks off, the wiring harness must be replaced.

The following description shows the Mechatronic removed. The wiring harness connector - A - is still installed in the transmission housing.

The connector - C - may be installed with or without locking mechanisms - 1 - and - 2 - depending on the version.

- Release both locking mechanisms - 1 - and - 2 - on the connector - C -, if applicable.

- Disconnect the connector - C - from the socket - D - on the Mechatronic.

- Remove the wiring harness - A - from the Mechatronic - B -. Disengage the tab - arrow -, on the back of the wiring harness, from the Mechatronic.

If the tab - arrow - on the backside of the wiring harness breaks off, the wiring harness must be replaced.

- Carefully lay the wiring harness aside.

The wiring harness is connected to the installed connector - 3 - and cannot be removed.

- Remove Mechatronic bolts in reverse order, for example first bolt - 14 -, then - 13 -, through - 1 -.

Only the indicated bolts - 14 through 1 - may be loosened.

If other bolts are loosened, this may affect the function of the Mechatronic unit or it may come apart.

- Remove the Mechatronic from the transmission.

Installing

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ ATF Pan, ATF Strainer and Mechatronic Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Make sure the seal - B - is installed correctly and is secure.

- Set Mechatronic unit in place without using force, and at the same time insert stud on the selector lever - arrow - into the groove on the selector slide - A -; if necessary, move selector slide back or forth.

- Tighten the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - on the Mechatronic to 2 Nm.

- Tighten the bolts on the Mechatronic to the tightening specification and in the given sequence, that is, first bolt - 1 -, then - 2 - through - 14 -.

- Attach the wiring harness - A - to the Mechatronic. At the same time, insert the tab - arrow - on the back of the wiring harness into the Mechatronic unit.

If the tab on the backside of the wiring harness breaks off, the wiring harness must be replaced.

- Remove both locking mechanisms - 1 and 2 - on the connector - C - as illustrated, if applicable.

- Carefully insert the connector - C - into the Mechatronic connector socket.

- Press both locking mechanisms - 1 and 2 - in on the connector - C - to secure it, if applicable.

Install in reverse order of removal paying attention to the following:

- Install the ATF strainer. Refer to => [ ATF Strainer ] Service and Repair.

- Install the ATF pan. Refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.

- Fill the ATF. Refer to => [ ATF, Draining or Filling after Repair ] ATF, Draining or Filling After Repair.
