Brake Pad: Testing and Inspection
Brake Pad Inspection
Warning:
Refer to Brake Dust Warning Brake Dust Warning.
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
3. Visually inspect the brake assembly.
4. Install 2 opposite wheel nuts with the flat side of the wheel nut against the brake rotor to retain the brake rotor to the wheel hub.
5. With the aid of an assistant or a brake pedal holding bar, apply and hold the foot brake.
6. Using a vernier caliper measure and record the distance from the outer brake pad backing plate (1) outer edge (2) to the friction surface of the brake rotor (3).
7. Using a vernier caliper measure and record the distance from the friction surface of the brake rotor (1) to the outer edge of the inner brake pad backing plate (2).
8. Replace the brake pad if:
* Either reading is 10 mm or less (this equates to 3 mm lining material remaining on the brake pad).
* If there is more than 2 mm variation between the inner and outer brake pad. This may be caused by the caliper binding. Refer to Brake Caliper Inspection (Front) Brake Caliper Inspection (Front)Brake Caliper Inspection (Rear) Brake Caliper Inspection (Rear).
9. Remove the brake pedal holding bar.
10. Remove the 2 wheel nuts from the wheel studs.
11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
