Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Engine Timing Components:
Remove or Disconnect
1. Remove torsional damper.
2. Remove water pump.
3. Remove oil pan.
4. Remove front cover bolts.
5. Remove front cover.
6. Remove front cover to block gasket.
7. Remove front crankshaft seal from the front cover.
NOTE: Pry out with a screwdriver. Take care not to distort the front cover.
Clean
^ Old gasket from the front cover and block.
Inspect
^ Front cover for distortion and damage. Replace if necessary.
Install or Connect
Tools Required
J 35468 Front Cover Aligner and Oil Seal Installer.
Engine Front Cover Seal Installation:
1. Install front crankshaft seal. Use tool J 35468.
NOTE: The open end of the seal faces inside the engine. Coat the seal lips with engine oil.
2. Install front cover gasket to the front cover. Use gasket cement to hold it in place.
3. Install front cover to the engine.
Tighten
Tighten cover to block bolts to 11.3 Nm (100 lb in)
4. Install oil pan.
Tighten
Tighten oil pan nuts at corners to 22 Nm (200 lb in)
Tighten oil pan bolts 11 Nm (100 lb in)
Tighten oil pan studs to rear seal retainer 2 Nm (15 in. lbs)
5. Install water pump. Refer to Water Pump. Service and Repair
Tighten
Tighten bolts/studs to 40 Nm (30 lb ft)
6. Install torsional damper.
Tighten
Tighten to 95 Nm (70 lb ft)
