Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J90, J96)

Removal Procedure

Warning:
Refer to Brake Dust Warning Brake Dust Warning.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.

Note:
Do not remove the brake caliper guide pins unless replacement is required.

3. Remove the brake caliper bracket bolts (1).

Caution:
Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

4. Remove the brake caliper and bracket assembly and support with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.

5. Remove the rear axle hub. Refer to Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement.

It is not necessary to remove the bearings and cups from the hub unless replacement is required.

6. Remove the rotor and hub assembly (1).

7. If installing the original brake rotor, mark the relationship of the rotor to the hub.

8. Remove the 8 rotor bolts (1).

9. Remove the rotor (1) from the hub.

10. Using a stiff wire brush, clean any accumulated debris and corrosion from the mating surfaces of the hub and rotor.
