Pinpoint Test P: The Stability/Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the stability/traction control indicator request from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The stability/traction control indicator operates according to the following chart:
The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) monitors the stability/traction control message from the ABS module and either flashes the stability/traction control indicator or turns it on steady depending on the condition. The stability/traction control indicator is also used to indicate a trailer sway condition (if equipped).
If the stability/traction control indicator status message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the stability/traction control indicator to its last state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the stability/traction control indicator status message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0121:00 in continuous memory and defaults the stability/traction control indicator on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Stability/traction control concern
- ABS module
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST P : THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
P1 CARRY OUT THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.
- Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) stability/traction control indicator (TC/IVD/RSCLMP) active command. Command the stability/traction control active indicator on and off while observing the stability/traction control indicator.
Does the stability/traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to P2.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
P2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0121:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AV. Pinpoint Test AV: DTC U0121:00
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to P3.
P3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the ABS module self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.
No
If the stability/traction control indicator is never on after the bulb prove-out, the system is operating correctly at this time.
If the stability/traction control indicator is always on, TEST the system for normal operation.
