Pinpoint Test A: The 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) Indicators Do Not Operate Correctly

Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Systems - Electronic Shift

Pinpoint Test A: The 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) Indicators Do Not Operate Correctly

Normal Operation

Indicator status of the 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) system is transmitted to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) from the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) through the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) then displayed in the message center of the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). The message center displays 4X4 HIGH when in 4H and 4X4 LOW in 4L. When in 2H, the message center will display 4X2 for approximately 4 seconds then no longer provides 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) system indication until another shift mode is attained. For information about HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network), refer to Information Bus.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) system fault

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

- TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module)

PINPOINT TEST A : THE 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) INDICATORS DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

A1 CHECK FOR IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).

Are any DTCs present?

Yes
If DTC U0102:00 is retrieved, REFER to Information Bus to diagnose lost communication with TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module). For all other IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs, REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
No
GO to A2.

A2 CHECK FOR TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) DTCs

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test- TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module).

Are any DTCs present?

Yes
REFER to the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) DTC Chart for diagnosis Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Systems - Electronic Shift.
No
GO to A3.

A3 CHECK THE TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) IGNITION POSITION (KEY_POS_4X4) AND IGNITION STATUS (KEY_STATUS_4X4) PIDs

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger- TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module).

- Monitor the KEY_POS_4X4 and KEY_STATUS_4X4 PIDs while cycling through each position.

Do the ignition PIDs match the ignition switch positions?

Yes
GO to A4.
No
If the KEY_STATUS_4X4 PID did not match, CHECK BJB (Battery Junction Box) fuse 54 (5A). If the fuse is OK, REPAIR circuit CBB54 (VT/OG). If the fuse is not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short [1][2]Diagrams By Number.

If the KEY_POS_4X4 PID did not match, REFER to Steering Column to diagnose the ignition switch.

A4 CHECK THE 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) SYSTEM INDICATION IN 2H

- Switch the MSS (Mode Select Switch) to 2H while monitoring the message center.

Does 4X2 display in the message center for approximately 4 seconds?

Yes
GO to A5.
No
GO to A6.

A5 CHECK THE 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) SYSTEM INDICATION IN 4H

- Switch the MSS (Mode Select Switch) to 4H while monitoring the message center.

Does 4X4 HIGH display in the message center?

Yes
GO to A8.
No
GO to A9.

A6 CHECK THE MSS (Mode Select Switch) USING THE TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) SWITCH STATUS (4X4_SW) PID

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger- TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module).

- Monitor the 4X4_SW PID while switching to each MSS (Mode Select Switch) position.

Does the 4X4_SW PID match the MSS (Mode Select Switch) position?

Yes
GO to A7.
No
INSTALL a new MSS (Mode Select Switch). REFER to Mode Select Switch (MSS) . TEST the system for normal operation.

A7 CHECK THE TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) PIDs IN 2H

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger- TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module).

- Command the Transfer Case Shift Motor Position Sense Contact Plate Power Circuit Status (PLATE_PWR_OS) PID to energize the transfer case gearmotor encoder assembly.

- Monitor the Integrated Wheel Ends Output Control (IWE_OS) PID and the Transfer Case Contact Plate Switch A (PLATE_A), B (PLATE_B), C (PLATE_C) and D (PLATE_D) PIDs with the MSS (Mode Select Switch) in the 2H position.

MSS (Mode Select Switch) Position Contact Plate Position PLATE_A PLATE_B PLATE_C PLATE_D 2H Mode CLOSED OPEN CLOSED CLOSED 4H Mode OPEN CLOSED CLOSED OPEN 4L Mode OPEN CLOSED OPEN CLOSED

Do the PIDs indicate the IWE (Integrated Wheel End) solenoid is energized (PID status No) and that the shift motor is in 2H position?

Yes
END the active command. CHECK the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) for faults.
No
END the active command. GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: The Vehicle Does Not Shift Between 2H and 4H Correctly and Grinding Noise Heard During 4WD engagement

A8 CHECK THE 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) SYSTEM INDICATION IN 4L

- NOTE: When shifting in or out of 4L, the transmission must be in NEUTRAL and the vehicle stopped or moving less than 5 km/h (3 mph).
With the vehicle at a stop and transmission in NEUTRAL, switch the MSS (Mode Select Switch) to 4L while monitoring the message center.

Does the message center display 4X4 LOW ?

Yes
The 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) indicators are operating correctly. CARRY OUT the ESOF (Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly) Functional Test. GO to Pinpoint Test I. Pinpoint Test I: Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF) Functional Test
No
GO to A10.

A9 CHECK THE TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) PIDs IN 4H

- Switch the MSS (Mode Select Switch) to 4H.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger- TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module).
