Third Clutch Assembly

^ Tools Required:
- J 38450 Third Clutch Sprag Retaining Ring Tool
- J 23075 Servo/Third Clutch Piston Spring Compressor
- J 23084 Third Clutch Seal Protector
- J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers


















1. Place the third clutch housing and input shaft assembly (319) upright using a soft jawed vise as a support.
2. Locate the end of the spray retainer ring (335). Compress near the end using a screwdriver through the side slot and slide one tool blade J 38450 between ring and housing to hold the ring clear of the groove.
3. Repeat with a second tool blade J 38450 near the other end of the retainer ring.
4. Repeat with a third tool blade J 38450 opposite the first two.
5. Repeat with two more blades J 38450 equally spaced.
6. Pull the input sun gear assembly (331) until the spray retainer ring (335) clears the ring groove.
7. Remove the tool blades J 38450.
8. Sprag race assembly (336) from third clutch drum assembly (319).
9. Bearing (330) and washers (329 & 332).
10. Third clutch plates (326, 327, 328).

NOTICE: If the third clutch plates are not being replaced, they must be installed in their original positions.

11. Position third clutch and input shaft assembly (319) in a press with the input shaft facing down.
12. Compress third clutch piston (322) using J 23075.

NOTICE: Do not overstress the springs and seat. This will cause damage to the spring seat.

13. Spring seat retainer ring (325).
14. Release the clutch piston.
- DO NOT LET THE SPRING SEAT CATCH IN THE RING GROOVE.
15. Remove tool J 23075.
16. Spring seat (324) and return springs (229).
17. Third clutch piston (322).





Inspect
- Third clutch piston checkball.
A. Shake the piston and listen for checkball movement.
B. Replace the piston if checkball is missing or falls out.
- Third clutch piston outer seal (320) for nicks, cuts, or damage.
- Third clutch piston inner seal (321) for nicks, cuts, or damage.
- Third clutch plates (306, 327, 328)
- Composite plates for rings, delamination or excessive wear
- Steel plates for damaged lugs or heat damage.
- Third clutch drum (319) for damage or worn clutch splines. Thrust washers (329, 332) and bearing (330) for damage.









ASSEMBLE
1. Third clutch piston inner seal (321). Seal lip must point toward the input shaft. Lubricate the seal with DEXRON transmission fluid.
2. Third clutch piston outer seal (320) onto the third clutch piston (322) as shown.
- Lubricate the seal with DEXRON transmission fluid. Use J 23084 to protect the seal during installation.
3. Third clutch piston (322) into the clutch drum (319)
4. Remove J 23084.
5. Third clutch piston return springs (229).
6. Spring seat (324).
7. Position the third clutch and input shaft assembly (319) in a press with the input shaft pointing down.
8. Compress the piston return springs (229) using J 23075.

NOTICE: Do not overstress the springs and seat. This will cause damage to the spring seat.

9. Spring seat retainer ring (325).
10. Remove J 23075.
